Jrwong23 (aka watchthebin) introduces the Montblanc 1858 collection, a significant release that pays homage to Minerva's founding year. His initial post highlights key models like the 1858 Chronograph Tachymeter with the Villeret calibre 16.29 and the 1858 Small Second Special Edition. This article synthesizes community reactions and additional insights, offering a deeper look into these historically inspired timepieces.

I just posted the press release and you can read it here:

I will come back to this collection soon. For Minerva lovers, this is a homage to the year the manufacture was founded, back in 1858.

I am especially exciting that Montblanc has released the Montblanc 1858 Chronograph Tachymeter with the lovely Villeret calibre 16.29!

Other than this chronograph which is limited to 100 pieces, there is a also a limited Montblanc 1858 Small Second Special Edition limited to 858 pieces in steel.

Some pics to share for now. I will share some live pictures when I have the chance smile

About the Montblanc 1858 Collection Ref. 1858

The Rolex Bubble Back, reference 1858, represents an early example of Rolex's self-winding waterproof wristwatches. This reference is part of the broader Bubble Back family, characterized by its distinctive domed case back designed to accommodate the thicker automatic movement of the era. It showcases Rolex's foundational efforts in developing robust and reliable automatic timepieces for everyday wear, laying groundwork for future Oyster Perpetual models.

This particular reference features an 18k white gold case, measuring 38mm in diameter. It is fitted with a sapphire crystal, protecting a silver dial. The watch is powered by an automatic movement, specifically the Boucheron 1858 caliber, offering a power reserve of 42 hours. The fixed bezel and leather strap complete the watch's classic presentation.

For collectors, the reference 1858 holds interest as an early and relatively rare iteration within the Bubble Back series, especially in white gold. Its larger case size for the period also makes it appealing to modern tastes. The presence of a date complication adds to its functionality, distinguishing it from simpler time-only Bubble Back models and highlighting Rolex's early integration of practical features.

...for those of us who are white metal crazy.... But, this is a wonderful piece - traditional Minerva movement and dial. Would love to see in person! Ken

What a creation from Montblanc. The "mount blanc" logo for the brand is nicely incorporated to the dial layout, too. What a watch! Can you, or anybody else, confirm if the hairspring was/is in-house? As far as I remember Minerva's hairsprings were, but I am not sure. Best Moritz

What a shame it is so strictly limited in output. Is there a chance that Montblanc will eventually put this movement and dial design in other metals?

I really love the 16.29 calibre. The case size is too big for my small wrist unfortunately but I will still want to try! Cheers Robin
