Penfriend's journey into Patek Philippe ownership with the Aquanaut ref. 5968A-001 offers a fascinating look into the contemporary luxury watch market. His candid account of navigating AD allocations and personal preferences, from the discontinued 5196P to the highly sought-after steel sport models, provides valuable insights for collectors considering their own first Patek Philippe acquisition. This article distills the community's reaction to his new arrival and his thoughtful reflections on the brand's evolving landscape.
Today I picked up my first Patek and I am very happy to be part of this community with this new arrival. When I received the ADs call about one week ago I got so excited and it will be a big honeymoon for the next days and weeks.
Last summer I was waiting for the strap adjustment of my DD40 at the AD and during that time I flipped - believe it or not - for the first time ever thoroughly through the PP catalogue. Four watches took my attention: this Aquanaut, the 5088P, the 5196P and the 5320G. Whilst I had to learn a little later that the 5196P was discontinued (still kicking myself for not taking the one available last autumn) the 5320G never grew absolutely to my heart although there were several occasions to buy one. With all the rumors about steel sport PP being discontinued my hopes for the 5968A vanished this spring and I had already set up my mind whether then to choose the blue 5968G or not….
So now I am very grateful to my AD for allocating me the presumably only piece he receives this year (instead of as usual two pieces). It surely has wrist presence through size and color, but as I love colors this was what also drew my attention to it about a year ago. The 5088P will arrive in September or October and I am very curious whether I will like it or not - but in any case I guess that my PP journey has started by today
You all have a great weekend!
