The reference 2497 was Patek Philippe's first serially produced center seconds perpetual calendar, powered by caliber 27SC Q. The case measures approximately 37 x 12.5mm.

The reference 2438/1 is a waterproof version of the 2497, with a screw-down case back.

Only 179 examples of both references combined were made during a 12-year run from 1951 to 1963 in two standard dial variations and two casemakers (Vichet & Wenger): 114 were the ref. 2497 and 65 were the ref. 2438/1. That total number is easily found because production was reserved for a specifically dedicated movement number range, starting at 888.000.

There are two major articles on Hodinkee concerning these references:

About the Patek Philippe Grand Complications Ref. 2497

The Patek Philippe reference 2497 is notable as the brand's first serially produced perpetual calendar with a center seconds hand. Introduced in 1951, this reference established a significant design and technical precedent for subsequent perpetual calendar models from the manufacture. It was produced for a period of 12 years, concluding in 1963. The reference 2497 is often discussed in conjunction with its water-resistant counterpart, the reference 2438/1.

This reference houses the manual-winding Patek Philippe caliber 27 SC Q, a movement specifically developed for its perpetual calendar and center seconds functionality. The case, typically crafted from precious metals, measures approximately 37mm in diameter and 12.5mm in thickness. The crystal protecting the dial is made of sapphire, and the watch was designed with a water resistance suitable for daily wear at the time of its production.

With a total production of 114 examples for the reference 2497 out of 179 combined with the 2438/1, this model is considered a rare and important piece for collectors of Patek Philippe's historical complications. It represents a key development in the brand's perpetual calendar lineage, appealing to those interested in the evolution of complex watchmaking and early serial production of such complications.
