Dr.kol's Baselworld 2017 report on Patek Philippe offers an unfiltered, picture-heavy first look at the brand's new releases, inviting readers to form their own opinions before diving into detailed impressions. This approach provides a raw, immediate perspective on models like the 5230G, 5131P, and 5170P, capturing the initial excitement and critical discussions that define a major watch fair. The post serves as a valuable archive of Patek Philippe's 2017 novelties and the community's immediate reactions.

This time I let the pictures talk. In the discussions afterwards, I will tell more about my impressions. However, it is important that each and every Purist can form his/her opinion and thus, I am mostly posting this time just non-edited pictures.

I think that the winner for general public was 5230G:

For me 5131P has a very special meaning. The dial is so well made that I can, with a bit imagination, see my home in northern Lapland as well as my property in the Norwegian border in the Northeast part of Finnish Lapland.

I also had to change my mind: this watch is great with bracelet.

I hope this will be my next watch.

Most of us were waiting for the new 5170P. I can confirm that the dial is simply stunning. Some people do not like the diamond indexes. Decide your self.

I never thought that I would love an Aquanaut made of gold. I was wrong. The new 5168G is stunning and in a couple of weeks I will handle also the new Advanced Research. It's clear that in the future, every now and then, I will wear a WG Aquanaut with blue dial.

I have often expressed my love towards 5960/1A. The black dial might be even better than the white one.

The dial of 5960G is really stunning. This is a new version between the steel one and the platinum version. The white gold is priced £ 10,700 above the steel version.

A very nice candidate for the first Patek is Calatrava 6006G. It is two mm larger than the earlier version and now it feels just right.

The new version of the annual calendar is available with gold indexes as well as diamond indexes. Can you spot the difference?

The skeleton watch 5180 is now available in rose gold. Artistic and stunning.

There were also a couple of fantastic watches for ladies. Mr. Thierry Stern advised my wife: "Don't let your husband decide but choose yourself". I am afraid to hear what kind of order I will get.

These were not all the new models. I will revert to the new collection in the middle of April.

In case you are not totally bored with the pictures, still some "bonus photos":

Thank you for watching.

I must also thank Mr. Ed Butland, Director of London Salon and Mr. Jerome Pernici, Commercial Director of Patek Philippe, who spent over an hour with us discussing deeply about the new collection.

In brief: 2017 collection is a winner. The new watches can't make everybody happy but for sure there is something great for most of us. Additionally, most of the old models are still there.

Best, Kari

About the Patek Philippe Ref. 5131

The Patek Philippe Complications reference 5131 is a World Time model, distinguished by its cloisonné enamel dial depicting a map of the world. This reference is part of a series that showcases Patek Philippe's expertise in both horological complications and traditional decorative arts, offering a functional travel watch with significant aesthetic appeal. It represents a continuation of the brand's long-standing tradition of producing World Time watches, updated with contemporary design elements and a self-winding movement. The 5131 is recognized for its intricate dial work, which varies depending on the specific metal and region depicted.

The watch features a 39.5mm case, available in various precious metals, housing the self-winding Caliber 240 HU. This movement provides a power reserve of 48 hours and drives the World Time complication, allowing the wearer to simultaneously view the time in 24 different time zones. The case is fitted with a sapphire crystal, ensuring durability and clear visibility of the detailed dial. Water resistance is rated at 30 meters, suitable for everyday wear. The fixed bezel frames the intricate dial, contributing to the watch's refined profile.

As a World Time model with a cloisonné dial, the 5131 appeals to collectors who appreciate both technical sophistication and artisanal craftsmanship. Its limited production and the unique hand-finished nature of each dial contribute to its desirability within the secondary market. The reference fits into Patek Philippe's Complications collection as a high-end travel watch, offering a distinctive alternative to more traditional time-only or chronograph models. Variants typically involve different precious metal cases and corresponding enamel map depictions.
