The 2509 reference is one of those classic Patek Philippe time only watches that exude more charm than one thinks possible for a time only watch. I have told this story before, buty i saw this watch for auction several years ago. The auction condition report stated that it believed the hands were incorrect. I looked at the watch and could not see why they were incorrect. The dial was also in fairly 'uncared" for condition. To put it bluntly, there were not many bidders for this watch.

I took it to Patek Philippe for servicing and an opinion from them on the hands. I have a letter now from them stating that these hands are absolutely correct and in their opinion are the hands that were born with the watch. Result!

The second result I had was the dial was fairly easy for Patek to repair. In fact, it now looks in mint condition.

The third result is that this 2509 came with an amagnetic movement. The original auction details showed that its movement was amagnetic, but the Patek Philippe extracts confirmed that the amagnetic movement was original to this watch. Presumably, it was a special order for a client that required this complication. According to auction house records, only 10-20 amagnetic 2509s have surfaced over the years.

As time only watches go, the 2508 and 2509 references take some beating for me in the vintage era. Of course the original 3417 amagnetic and 570 are superb examples of the genre. But there stays with me a lot of affection for this 2509....more charming than sporty. More evening than day. Sure....complications are exciting. But every watch has its place. This one has a firm spot in my collection.

About the Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 570

The Patek Philippe reference 570 is a classic Calatrava-style dress watch, representing a significant period in the brand's production of time-only pieces. It is distinguished by its clean lines and minimalist aesthetic, embodying the traditional design principles that Patek Philippe is known for in its non-complicated watches. The reference 570 was offered in various metals and dial configurations, making each example unique within the broader series of Patek Philippe's round cased watches from the mid-20th century.

This particular example features an 18k white gold case with a diameter of 38mm. It is fitted with a sapphire crystal, protecting a silver dial. The watch is powered by a manual wind movement, reflecting the common practice for high-end dress watches of its era. The water resistance is rated at 30 meters, typical for a watch of this type and period.

The reference 570 appeals to collectors seeking a pure expression of Patek Philippe's watchmaking heritage, particularly those interested in the brand's foundational dress watch designs. Its various iterations, including different case materials and dial finishes, offer a range of options for discerning collectors. The enduring appeal of the 570 lies in its understated elegance and its representation of a specific era of Patek Philippe's design philosophy.
