Nicolas (amanico) presents the Patek Philippe 3939G, a timepiece that transcends mere horology to become a true object of desire. His original post captures the essence of this reference, highlighting its black enamel dial, tourbillon, and minute repeater as the pinnacle of Patek Philippe's artisanal and technical mastery. This article delves into why the 3939G remains a "grail" for collectors, exploring its unique attributes and the community's perspective on its enduring appeal.

The Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 3939 is a highly complex and significant offering within the Calatrava line, known for its combination of a minute repeater and a tourbillon. This reference represents a pinnacle of traditional horological craftsmanship, showcasing Patek Philippe's capabilities in grand complications within a classically styled case. It was produced in very limited numbers, making it a notable piece for collectors of high-complication watches.
Crafted in precious metals, the reference 3939 typically features a case diameter of 33.3mm, a size that allows for a refined presence on the wrist while housing its intricate movement. The watch is powered by a manual-wind caliber R TO 27 PS, which integrates both the minute repeater and the tourbillon mechanisms. The movement is visible through a sapphire crystal case back, allowing appreciation of its finishing and the tourbillon cage. The dial is often enamel, contributing to its refined aesthetic.
This reference appeals to collectors who prioritize technical sophistication and traditional finishing. Its dual grand complications, combined with the understated elegance of the Calatrava design, position it as a significant achievement in watchmaking. The limited production and the complexity of its movement contribute to its desirability and its place as a distinguished example of Patek Philippe's haute horlogerie.
Is for a bank vault full of money to buy one 🤣
It has applied Brequest numerals on black enamel dial, and looks amazing & powerful 👍 A small reference and yet a LARGE grail !
Such a incredible and beautiful watch
Basically, imagine a typical 3939H in RG, yet with enamel black dial / RG hands / minute dripplets etc. Basically, like the Harrods 3923 i had gotten from them brand new in England, yet with black dial and repeater / tourbillon. David J @ H. Stern was helping me with it long ago, yet the owner was asking a bit... asperational (even by today's highly devalued currency pricing). Think it was around the same time Dufour was doing a souscription for us TZ guys, as i recall. Ah, those were the fun da
. . . I contemplated GTP ( G rand T heft P atek) for? [photo credits: Dr No, 2011] Yes, I even had it on my wrist. All I had to do was run out the door, cross Wilshire Boulevard, and I'd be home free. 🏃🏽
I like that they print the minimum net worth required to own the watch on the dial
