Baron - Mr Red reflects on over five years of ownership with his Patek Philippe 5070P, sharing his enduring affection for this platinum chronograph. He draws a compelling parallel between the 5070P and the iconic Rolex Daytona Paul Newman, positioning it as Patek Philippe's equivalent in terms of unique dial character and collector appeal.

I have to admit, when I bought this watch and "opened the plastic" some 5 years ago or more now, the recognition of having spent more money on a watch than I had ever done before did send a certain frisson up my back. As my collecting process has evolved, some watches have gone...some have stayed...some have been added. This is one where the joy just keeps growing. Back from service a few months ago, it is looking in very fine shape. I do enjoy this watch a great deal. I posted a theme on it showing how many different shades of blue could be captured. I have not been able to catch better shots of the dial again.....to celebrate its 5yr place on my wrist, I post some of those shots again.

The Rolex Daytona Paul Newman has a dial which just captures something extra. To my mind, the 5070P is the Patek "Paul Newman".

I own rarer more valuable watches than my DRSD Mk2, yet for some odd reason that is my favourite Rolex...the 5070P catches me in a similar way...it is my favourite Patek....just.

About the Patek Philippe Ref. 5070

The Patek Philippe reference 5070, part of the Complications collection, marked a significant return for the brand to large-format chronographs. Introduced in 1998, it was the first non-perpetual calendar chronograph produced by Patek Philippe since the reference 1463, which ceased production in the early 1960s. Its design drew inspiration from a unique Patek Philippe aviator's watch from the 1940s, characterized by its prominent case and dial layout, yet reinterpreted for a contemporary audience. This reference established a new aesthetic direction for the brand's chronographs, moving towards more substantial case dimensions.

The watch features a 42mm case, initially offered in 18k yellow gold, housing the manual-winding Caliber CH 27-70. This movement, based on a Nouvelle Lémania ébauche, was extensively finished and modified by Patek Philippe, meeting the brand's stringent quality standards. It provides a power reserve of approximately 55 hours. The dial, in this specific configuration, is black, protected by a sapphire crystal, and the watch is water-resistant to 30 meters. The fixed bezel frames the dial, and the watch is typically fitted with a leather strap.

Reference 5070 appeals to collectors interested in modern Patek Philippe chronographs that combine traditional movement architecture with a more contemporary case size. Its limited production run and the subsequent introduction of variants in other precious metals contribute to its collectibility. The reference represents a distinct period in Patek Philippe's chronograph history, bridging vintage inspirations with a new era of larger watch designs.

What's not to cherish, indeed!

Through your text, I just realized that it will be 5 years of love for mine, too, in a few weeks. Compared to the G, the P adds an extra touch of coolness. While the silver is more serious, understated. There are a lot of reasons to love this Watch, if Love needed reasons, by the way. Please bring it with you, we have a side by side picture to take! Best, Nicolas

I once had the G and P together....

.....but alas let the G go. They make a very cool duo...the entire 5070 range in fact works well together

The whole 5070 line is very tempting. But a bit expensive.

I'd rather go for the whole 5110 line, OR for the two white metal 5070... Best, Nicolas

too many alternatives to consider

On 5110...i'd either go P or G...... similar with 5070....I'd rather have 5110G and P and 5070P and G than an entire set of 5070s or 5110s
