Yes, this is my dream come true, finally after years of collecting, contemplating.

Today, I welcome this 5270G-013 (Jay Leno special đŸ«ŁđŸ˜œ). Since its release back in Nov 2013, there has been lots of controversy.

Previous moderators “Mark in Paris”, “Small Luxury World” had some posts about these and we can see the divided views. There are only 2 other collectors I’ve seen here posting their 5270G with this “Chin”, one of them “Winfrizz” who owns all 3 versions and another “p.boxster” who owns one of the 50 Munich version.

I always wanted a Patek Philippe Grand Complication and a Perpetual Calendar Chronograph is, to me, the top echelon of watch complication. I think this is the grail. There are Tourbillons and Minute Repeaters but coming from an engineering background, who is a worker bee and always thinking pros/cons, practicality, the PCC is my maximum level I would like to attain for my watch journey.

For years, I pondered about which references to end this dream
the earlier 1518/2499 are beyond reach but I’ve always been a modern reference/movement collector. I prefer my watches to be new, fairly new, not 30/50 years old. The 3970s are a little small to me while the 5970s are nice but I wore a 5270 and it’s just fits.

Then, it’s about which 5270 to get
I know the R/J/P is nice too but when I read more about the 5270G, and how the -013/-014 were discontinued in 2015, plus how they were “unloved” makes me feel this is best “value for money” for me to get my dream at the least cost. Sorry, I know we shouldn’t talk $$ but remember I’m a practical person ? These factors have to be taken into account. The PCC caliber is the maximum level of watches that I like to spend on One watch.

I even thought about going all in to the 5004/5204 or a Lange Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon but the former 5004 proportion is not for me, so is the 5204 thickness and wearability. The concern of the Lange is this watch is a Cat 6 watch and service/repair is “price upon request”, which is a huge red flag
.I’m not sure if I can swallow those huge 5-figure service bills.

Therefore, this 5270G-013 is my choice and pictures does not do the silver opaline dial justice. The white dial looks great, actually very clean. I thought about the blue dials but the white date disc just doesn’t do it for me.

There is my long story
I kind of lost interest in many of the recent new releases and this is a strong signal for me to sit back, enjoy my watches.

Enjoy and have a great weekend. Happy collecting, my friends. This journey has been fun. I am now grateful to some nice secondary dealers because I am done with games by some brands.

About the Patek Philippe Grand Complications Ref. 3970

The Patek Philippe reference 3970 is a perpetual calendar chronograph, a complication central to the brand's heritage. It succeeded the highly regarded reference 2499 and served as a bridge to the later reference 5970. The 3970 was produced over an extended period, allowing for several series and subtle variations in its design, making it a significant model for collectors interested in the evolution of Patek Philippe's complicated wristwatches.

This reference features a 36mm case, commonly found in 18k white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, and platinum. It is powered by the manual-wind caliber CH 27-70 Q, based on a Lemania ébauche, which offers a power reserve of 60 hours. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal, protecting a dial that typically includes subdials for the chronograph, perpetual calendar displays, and moon phases.

The 3970 appeals to collectors seeking a classic Patek Philippe perpetual calendar chronograph with a traditional aesthetic and a historically important movement. Its long production run from 1986 to 2004 means that examples from different series, such as the first, second, and third, exhibit minor differences in dial layout and case details, providing distinct collecting opportunities within the reference.

Congratulations on your terrific Christmas gift. And from an

engineering and technical point of view it makes pefect sense as it has no interrupted scales thanks to the chin 😁👍
