Abu Alex, a respected member of the WatchProSite community, ignited a compelling discussion by posing a classic collector's dilemma: trade a Patek Philippe 5711J for the discontinued 5711A white dial. His query delves into the nuanced considerations beyond mere aesthetics, exploring wearability, material preferences, and the practicalities of integrating such a significant piece into a collection. This article synthesizes the community's diverse perspectives, offering valuable insights for anyone contemplating a similar horological decision.

About the Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 5711

The Patek Philippe reference 5711/1A-011, part of the Complications collection, is distinguished by its white dial, offering a different aesthetic compared to other dial variations within the 5711 series. This particular configuration provides a clean and legible presentation, appealing to collectors who prefer a more understated yet refined look. It represents a specific iteration of a well-known Patek Philippe model, recognized for its integrated design.

The watch features a 40mm stainless steel case, housing the self-winding Caliber 26-330 SC movement. This movement provides a power reserve of 45 hours. The case is fitted with a sapphire crystal, contributing to its water resistance of 120 meters. The fixed bezel and integrated bracelet are characteristic elements of its construction.

This reference appeals to collectors interested in the evolution of Patek Philippe's offerings, particularly those seeking specific dial colors within established model lines. Its production run from 2019 to 2021 marks it as a relatively recent, yet now discontinued, variant. The watch's specifications align with Patek Philippe's standards for mechanical timepieces.

..swimming. I have the 5711J on the Patek Philippe rubber strap. I also thought it was leather when I saw it first. I have just gotten a bit tired of gold watches over the last year or so. I also think the stainless steel version is more easily wearable in most situations.

I’ll let others comment, but my personal experience of wearing the SS nautilus models (5711 and 5712) on bracelet was not that enjoyable. The clasp leaves a lot to be desired, and the watches felt extra light (seiko light [i know that I’m gonna get burned on the stake for saying this]😱), if that makes sense. Because of gold’s heft, your watch shouldn’t haven’t that problem. I’m not trying to knock on a watch that is sought after by the entire universe (or so it seems), I’m just trying to make su

One would think that for two really different propositions the decision would be very easy, but it never is, isn't it! I think it depends what your collection looks like in terms of gaps, and where your heart is. For me I like sports watches and 9 times out of 10 i will be skewed towards one, unless i want to beef up the dressier part of my collection.

The J is my favorite 5711. I'd keep it, if I had one. Only reason I don't have one is, that a I didn't find a good exanple.

The two are similar in terms lightness, but I think the Rolex bracelets with age have generally got some stretch which combined with the lightness gives the impression of flimsiness. For my, the bracelet on the 5711 is one of the most comfortable of all.

If you think the white metal would allow you to get more wrist time with the watch, and make it more versatile for years to come, then that’s good enough reason. A previously shared photo of my 5711.
