In this insightful discussion, @Patek_Ambassador explores a common dilemma for seasoned collectors: the perceived redundancy of owning two Patek Philippe annual calendar chronographs, specifically the 5905P and the 5960A. His query delves into the nuances of material, dial color, and complication layout, seeking community input on whether these references offer distinct enough experiences to justify their place in a curated collection. This article synthesizes the community's perspectives on distinguishing similar Patek Philippe complications.

I currently own a 5905P annual calendar chronograph and love it and will never sell. But I am not in range at my two Patek ADs to ever to be offered a Nautilus in my current lifetime and I have an insatiable desire for a stainless steel Patek sports watch on a bracelet. This brought me to discovering the white dial 5960A, a stainless steel white dial chronograph. Is it different enough from the black dial 5905P, which is also an annual calendar chronograph to not be redundant in my collection?

With the acquisition of a 5960A my Patek collection would consist of:

5130R World Time - rose gold white dial
5170J Manual Wind 30-minute chronograph - yellow gold white dial
5905P Annual Calendar 1-hour chronograph - platinum black dial
5960A Annual Calendar 12-hour chronograph - stainless white dial

Here are photos of the 5905P and 5960A for comparison:

About the Patek Philippe Ref. 5130

The Patek Philippe Complications reference 5130, introduced in 2006, is a World Time watch that succeeded the popular reference 5110. This model maintained the distinctive World Time complication, allowing for simultaneous display of time in 24 different time zones. Its design evolved with a slightly larger case and updated dial aesthetics, distinguishing it from its predecessor while retaining the core functionality that defines Patek Philippe's travel timepieces. It was produced until 2017.

The watch features an 18k rose gold case measuring 39.5mm in diameter and 9.8mm in thickness, housing the self-winding Caliber 240 HU movement. This ultra-thin movement, visible through a sapphire crystal case back, provides a power reserve of 48 hours. The dial is silver or opaline with a guilloché center, protected by a sapphire crystal. Water resistance is rated at 30 meters.

Reference 5130 appeals to collectors seeking a sophisticated travel complication from Patek Philippe. Its larger case size compared to the 5110 offered a more contemporary presence on the wrist, while its classic World Time mechanism remained a hallmark of the brand's technical prowess. The model was available in various precious metals, with the rose gold variant offering a warm aesthetic.

I see them as very different references and wouldn't be concerned about redundancy because they'd likely occupy different niches in your wearing habits. The differences in metal, dials, colors, size, pushers, and sportiness easily distinguish them. Park

And this 5960 is for certain very sporty, perhaps more so with the white dial than the black. Look forward to hearing about what you decide.

... and I like it a lot overall but details keep irritating me including the power reserve w/o scale, the busy subdial, and the shiny bracelet in conflict w the general sportiness. While it is certainly different from your 5905P, I do think one ACC is enough. I'd rather address the Nautilus issue one way or another than spending on a 5960/1A.

For me the most appealing AC from PP. Especially I appreciate that the windows are not white but in the same colour as the dial. Best Thomas

how the 5960 fits within your longer term “strategy”, especially you already have some significant Pateks. For me, although the 5905 and 5960 have different color dials, functionally they are the same and have the same dial lay-out with same apertures. Let us know what you decide and have a fun time in deciding !

different watches on the wrist I have got only the blue 5905P and the grey 5960P, but the 5960/1A will fit good together with the 5905P...
