ArmisT's acquisition of the Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167A sparked a vibrant discussion among collectors, highlighting the model's unique appeal and polarizing characteristics. This article delves into the community's perspective on the Aquanaut's design, wearability, and its place within the broader Patek Philippe catalog, offering insights that remain relevant for both seasoned enthusiasts and new collectors.

Funny how there was a recent couple of posts about Aquanauts, then I get ‘the call’ to come cut the seal and get it sized. Wasn’t sure how I’d feel about the composite (read: rubber) strap, but it has a distinct look and I don’t have to be as delicate with this accessory.

Between this and the 5164, the travel time is awesome with more presence and likely a stronger following, but I ultimately felt I needed to go with the core/classic reference.
First impressions are that it’s unassuming and very easy wearing.  In any case, I’m happy to share with you all.
Thanks for looking.

About the Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time Ref. 5164

The Patek Philippe Aquanaut reference 5164, known as the Travel Time, introduces a dual time zone complication to the Aquanaut collection. This reference maintains the distinctive rounded octagonal case shape and integrated strap design characteristic of the Aquanaut line, while adding practical functionality for travelers. It represents a more complex offering within the Aquanaut family, catering to those who require a sophisticated yet robust timepiece for global use.

The 5164A-001 variant features a stainless steel case measuring 40.8 mm in diameter and 10.2 mm in thickness. It houses the self-winding caliber 324 S C FUS movement, which provides a power reserve of approximately 45 hours. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal and offers water resistance up to 120 meters. The dial is typically black embossed, and the watch is secured by a composite strap with a fold-over clasp.

This reference appeals to collectors seeking a Patek Philippe with a practical complication suitable for daily wear and travel. Its stainless steel construction and composite strap make it a durable option compared to more formal complications. The Travel Time function, indicated by two skeletonized hour hands for home and local time, along with day/night indicators for both, positions the 5164 as a highly functional piece within the broader Patek Philippe sports watch catalog.

I’ll also be curious to see how my experience of this model changes. I even saw someone put this on a nato strap. Not my taste, but I guess there are options. Still, I never considered the bracelet until I saw it on you 👏🏼 Thanks.

I prefer the 5167 over the 5164 due to its thinness. So this piece is amongst my favorite among the Aquanaut models!

since their dials can indeed be even more sensual than this new one. But I am honestly surprised that Aquanaut is also one of those long wait references in today’s modern craze.

I do not think of it as a sports watch. To a non watch person it looks like a $50 watch. AND YET, I find to be utterly charming. I find the dial mesmerizing with its almost military look. It is super comfortable, has an incredible movement and is totally under the radar. And hey, it is worn by the 2 remaining Beatles, although I think Paul’s is a 5165. So, bottom line I love owning and wearing this “enigma”. Best, Patekova

and that’s why the 5164 travel time would normally be my preference based on size. But i ultimately decided to go with this basic/classic. The 5968 with orange accents is next level Aquanaut, although Travel Time so practical.
