Baron - Mr Red seeks community opinions on expanding his Patek Philippe collection, which already features vintage Calatravas, a 5110G World Time, and a 5070P Chronograph. He emphasizes a 'horizontal' collecting bias, focusing on diverse references rather than multiple variations of a single model. This article explores collector recommendations for complementary additions.

I will start off by stating that I already have a good idea of my intended direction, but I am curious to hear how others view it. Of course, personal taste will vary considerably from one person to another, and nobody can really get inside my head to determine where I will go. My question is rather about where others would go give this starting point.....

I have a small collection of vintage Calatrava. I am very pleased with them and would not look to add further in this area of my Patek collection.

I have a 5110G world time and a 5070P Chronograph from the relatively modern era. Again, I am very happy with this part of my collection.

What would you add to compliment the collection? Most of my collection bias tends to be horizontal in nature rather than vertical (a la Bill's definition). With the exception of Sea-Dwellers, i do not tend to immerse into an entire reference. Rather, I find what I like within a specific area and go for the reference that I like best. For example, one could choose to collect all 4 metals of the 5070. Similarly with the 5110s. That really is not my plan.

Instead, what do others see as the most logical step to add to this collection? As I said, I have a fairly good idea where i am heading, but with all the expertise and quality opinion on this forum, I am curious to hear how others view it.

About the Patek Philippe Ref. 5130

The Patek Philippe Complications reference 5130, introduced in 2006, is a World Time watch that succeeded the popular reference 5110. This model maintained the distinctive World Time complication, allowing for simultaneous display of time in 24 different time zones. Its design evolved with a slightly larger case and updated dial aesthetics, distinguishing it from its predecessor while retaining the core functionality that defines Patek Philippe's travel timepieces. It was produced until 2017.

The watch features an 18k rose gold case measuring 39.5mm in diameter and 9.8mm in thickness, housing the self-winding Caliber 240 HU movement. This ultra-thin movement, visible through a sapphire crystal case back, provides a power reserve of 48 hours. The dial is silver or opaline with a guilloché center, protected by a sapphire crystal. Water resistance is rated at 30 meters.

Reference 5130 appeals to collectors seeking a sophisticated travel complication from Patek Philippe. Its larger case size compared to the 5110 offered a more contemporary presence on the wrist, while its classic World Time mechanism remained a hallmark of the brand's technical prowess. The model was available in various precious metals, with the rose gold variant offering a warm aesthetic.

May a suggest a nautilus , an ellipse in yellow gold. The nautilus , the 38mm model. The one previous to the new model 5711a. As you have a chrono & world time , perhaps you need playboy watches of patek both a nautilus and ellipse. Cheers! Geross

.......I think they are iconic and have a really nice look on the wrist. Nauty is not for me. I know I am in a very small minority, but the watch doesn't appeal to me. Yes, Geross, I have mentioned the possibility of a vintage Ellipse before. I think that is a nice addition.

I like your vertical/horizontal thing Joe I think I prefer the vertical collecting even if, in the end, it is the sensation I have in owning a watch that preveils, no matter the fact I may have a close looking watch already. I guess you would like to remain in a more reasonable price budget so I won't mention 3970 or 5970. You don't like the Nautilus either (I didn't at the beginning but when I tried it on... it was love at first "try"), which would have been my proposition. So, if upper budget:

The vertical vrs horizontal was a Bill term. I like it too. To be a vertical guy, I think you need to have a very focussed passion. I have that in some specific areas, but in Rolex rather than Patek. The 3940 is a watch I love. I saw MikeH version in Paris and it is a superbly elegant watch. Yes, you hit on another that is on my defined wishlist. 5970 is one i have owned before but decided to sell. Whenever I had the choice between the 5070 and 5970, there was only one winner for me....being the
