GLau's recent encounter with a Patek Philippe enamel dial, crafted by Anita Porchet and team, offers a rare glimpse into haute horlogerie. This post highlights the allure of a true grail piece, prompting a discussion on the aesthetic preferences and market dynamics surrounding such exceptional timepieces. GLau's experience underscores the profound impact of witnessing a horological masterpiece firsthand, even if ownership remains a dream.

The Patek Philippe Reference 5531 is distinguished as a World Time Minute Repeater, a highly complex combination of two of Patek Philippe's signature complications. It was initially introduced as a limited edition, highlighting both the brand's technical prowess in horology and its artistic application of métiers d'art, specifically cloisonné enamel work on the dial, depicting urban landscapes.
The case of the 5531 measures 40.20 mm in diameter and 11.49 mm in thickness, crafted in rose gold. It is powered by the self-winding Caliber R 27 HU, an integrated movement that allows the minute repeater to chime the local time as indicated by the world time function. The watch features a sapphire crystal.
This reference appeals to collectors seeking Patek Philippe's high complications combined with unique artistic dials. The initial release in 2017 featured two distinct cloisonné enamel dial variants, each depicting a Manhattan skyline, one in a daytime scene and the other at night, further enhancing its exclusivity and collector appeal within the grand complication series.
But I have been hands on with like a dozen patek philippe repeaters so maybe I'm just desensitized
This is one of the most unique references of world time with MR.
Funnily, I am planning to do a post dedicated to the variants of the 5531 someday (I've started gathering information and photos, but I lack time right now). Having never seen any example in real life, it's hard for me to be sure of how I would feel in real life. The only thing I can say is that I don't feel fully attracted to these lake views: they're not my favorite sceneries for an enamel dial. I find them a bit too "expected" (no offense to Johnathan Siu, his watch is a grail, of course). Th
Like in the case of Stallone....but...or I guess rules don't apply to these HNW people or they don't really care, lol.... Or maybe this is good marketing for the brand as they have been very proud to showcase their treasures held great value, are true treasures. Honestly, I think this open market is healthy for many of us, who really just wants a grail piece and who can't get it thru "proper channels", can get it at auctions.
May your dreams of it be even more vivid now. While both the R and G are at the pinnacle of watchmaking, aesthetically I prefer the G although of course would be thrilled to own either one. Sweet dreams Gordon! Best, Patekova
Two years ago, during the Tokyo Exhibition, AD told me I could order any model I wanted, and I initially considered ordering the 5531G (lake view), but the high price put me off, so I quickly gave up. I was also interested in the G, which is my favorite material, and above all, I had a wonderful experience cruising Lake Lucerne during my trip to Switzerland. The calm waters and crystal clear meltwater!
