Patek Philippe chose for the purpose the highly refined technique of micro marquetry in wood: Reference 5089G-059 – Roped Alpinists – comprises 262 pieces of wood from 27 species with 40 inlays reflecting different textures, veining and colors. All mounted on a gold back.
To outline this play of straight and curves echoing those of the case, the enameler used 69cm of 24K yellow gold wire measuring 0.1 x 0.45mm in cross-section, which he cut into tiny segments and shaped by hand before fixing it to the gold base plate.
