MTF's report from the Sincere Watch Academy Colloquium in 2008 offers a rare glimpse into Peter Speake-Marin's early philosophy and future plans, including the tantalizing prospect of in-house movements. This article provides valuable historical context for understanding the evolution of Speake-Marin as an independent watchmaker and his enduring commitment to longevity and aesthetic innovation.

Headmaster Patrick Tan welcomes students to another Sincere Watch Academy Colloquium

Guest Lecturer - Peter Speake-Marin A.H.C.I.

Peter went through a 'Brief History of Speake-Marin Time-Pieces' and his philosophy about the use of form, function and technique in his designs.

With his background in restoration, Peter appreciates the need to ensure that every Speake-Marin watch is made to 'wear well' and to 'wear-down well'; i.e. made to last.

Where required, over-engineering has been the watch-word to ensure longevity, stability and reliability.

Where desired, aesthetics has been the raison d'etre to just make beautiful objects or to try new decorative techniques. Some examples have been the use of marquetry, ammonite, jade, other stones and panther iron for the dials, just to see if cutting techniques are up to the job. Peter has a deep appreciation for Japanese art and culture as evidenced by the use of ancient techniques like mokugane (woodgrained ironwork) and maki-e (lacquerwork).

He ended with a tantalising mention that we will see PSM movements in the next couple of years; initially in prototypes that will be tested to destruction as well as an inaugural edition of watches containing the new movements. Eventually, the new movements will be phased into regular production watches.

You heard it here....soon there'll be a queue round the block smile

It was a most engaging night where we learned quite a good bit about PSM's current and future direction. Thank you also Mr and Mrs PSM and SWA for the opportunity to hold and behold these precious creations! They were more than pretty stones and fossils to look at, they were to be drooled at! And of course the canapes and finger food were excellent as usual amid great company and friends. See you soon MTF! Cheers! Lionel

... of a very interesting event, where the speaker was openly informing about his current and future plans, in a very nice environment, with good people and good food. Couldn't ask for more from these colloquia.

Indbir, I just got back from a trip to se your beautiful #1 Serpent in an elegant size. So nice!. What is the timekeeping like on the wrist? I often wonder if small production handcrafted watches can achieve good timing like the big boys with mass production? Regards, MTF
