SJX's report from the 2012 Richard Mille Tokyo collectors' event offers a rare glimpse into the brand's exclusive gatherings and showcases its diverse collection. This article highlights how Richard Mille cultivates a unique experience for its top clients, blending horological display with cultural immersion. Readers gain insight into the brand's approach to client engagement and product presentation, which remains a key aspect of its strategy today.

Every year Richard Mille Japan hosts its top clients and friends for dinner in Tokyo with Mr Richard Mille. This year's event was a two parter, which started at the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery, which is part of the Meiji Jingu complex, the shrine dedicated to the Emperor Meiji.

Usually a museum exhibiting murals which depict the Emperor Meiji, the main hall of the gallery was repurposed to display horological art instead. Many of Tokyo's top watch collectors were present at the event, including our very own KIH.

It was a dimly lit hall, but around the perimeter of the hall were brightly lit display cases with all of the 2012 Richard Mille collection, as well as some notable pieces from the past.

The RM001

RM004 Felipe Massa

One of my favourite RM watches, the RM012 "tube tourbillon"

RM018 Boucheron with stone gears

RM020

RM050 with carbon nanotube case

RM053 Pablo McDonough - not my favourite RM

RM052 "skull tourbillon"

RM038 Bubba Watson

And the star of the show was undoubtedly the sapphire cased RM056

After the exhibition, guests were taken by taxi - a fleet of neatly arranged taxis were waiting as a testament to impeccable Japanese organisation - to the nearby Royal Garden cafe for dinner but unfortunately I don't have pictures of that. It was a wonderful evening. Many thanks to Richard Mille Japan, as well as to KIH.

About the Richard Mille Tourbillon Ref. RM001

Richard Mille RM001 Tourbillon

The RM001 represents Richard Mille's inaugural tourbillon reference, produced from 2001 to 2005. This reference establishes the foundational characteristics of the RM 001 series within the brand's collection, featuring the manual-winding RM001 caliber in a compact tonneau-shaped case.

The 38mm titanium case houses the manual-winding RM001 movement, protected by sapphire crystal and rated to 50 meters water resistance. The skeletonized dial construction reveals the movement architecture, while the manual caliber delivers a 70-hour power reserve. The watch is completed with a rubber strap.

This reference appeals to collectors seeking Richard Mille's early production pieces, particularly those focused on the brand's tourbillon complications. The combination of titanium construction, compact 38mm sizing, and skeletonized presentation positions the RM001 as an entry point into Richard Mille's technical watchmaking approach during the brand's formative production years.

So many fabulous watches. Love the photos of the RM056 - an apparition of a watch.... Also great to see an RM001 after so many years! Have to say I envy you being there.... but thanks for the report. Andrew H

organised its event is very different from that of RM Singapore, which I attended twice. Would prefer the way the RM Japan had done it. Thanks for the report, JX.

It was too dark, but thank you for taking better photos than mine and looks very nice. They do these interesting events every year and I personally look forward to it. They did surpass my expectation again. Kudos, RM and RM Japan. Special thanks to Shigeta-san, Boutique manager of RM Japan. Best, Ken
