Philipps introduces his Rolex Ref. 8171 "Padellone," a significant vintage piece known for its large 38mm case and in-house movement, a departure from the Valjoux-based chronographs of its era. This article highlights the watch's historical context and its unique position within Rolex's vintage offerings, predating the brand's focus on sports models.

New in the house is this so called Padellone [Big Pan] in yellowgold with reference number 8171. No valjoux based movement was used as we see in the chrono's but it's own manufacture caliber in a special big snap on case, limited production as been said in circa 1000 examples were produced from 1949 to 1952 in 18K yellow or pink gold, as well as some models in stainless steel. Super elegant watch to wear and before i got hooked on vintage Sport Rolex my heart went to these kind of complications....

Mine has an early number and some nice patina on the dial and it's size with 38 mm diameter and 46 mm from lug to lug is impressive and must have been hudge for the time Rolex offered it as we see here:

About the Rolex Padellone Ref. 8171

The Rolex Reference 8171, known colloquially as the 'Padellone' due to its substantial 38mm case diameter for its era, represents one of Rolex's few triple calendar models with a moon phase complication. Produced for a limited period between 1949 and 1952, it stands apart from the brand's more tool-oriented offerings, showcasing a sophisticated aesthetic that appeals to collectors seeking horological complexity from Rolex.

This self-winding chronometer is powered by the Caliber A.295 CPL 10 1/2" movement, featuring 17 jewels. The case, available in yellow gold, pink gold, or stainless steel, houses a silver sunburst dial, often referred to as 'cadran soleil argent,' with applied gold baton and dot numerals. It displays the date via a central gilt hand on an outer blue ring, with day and month indicated through angular apertures. A subsidiary dial at 6 o'clock combines moon phases with constant seconds. The case features a snap-on back and calendar correctors integrated into the band.

The Reference 8171 is highly regarded for its distinctive design and rarity, particularly the pink gold variants, which were produced in smaller quantities. Its large diameter, clean lines, and comprehensive calendar display contribute to its enduring appeal in the vintage watch market. The presence of original dial features, such as sharp apertures and uniform patina, is a key factor for collectors assessing authenticity and condition.

This is how Rolex looked to the moon in '49...no smile, probably still bitter from the WWII ;- ( With a little help from Photoshop i just turned the mouth 180 degrees to let it smile ;- )

To smile ...? But you're true, I didn't noticed it. It seems to be quite uncommon, indeed. Best. Nicolas

Hi everyone. This is indeed a very informative thread, and as mentioned above away from the usual suspects. Here is my little contribution to your thread, though nothing as prestige as your sample, but this is my 1st ever vintage purchase. "> "> "> "> Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

What's not to love your Vintage Rolex? It is dressy, in a super condition, with a lot of charm. What more do you want? I have to confess that I didn't know this model, but it is always interesting to see Rolex Which are different from the Professional Line. So, thank you. Looking forward to read you more often here, Best. Nicolas
