Christianch shares his experience acquiring a Rolex Day-Date in platinum, a watch he considers both discreet and exclusive. His post delves into the subtle differences in the ice-blue dial, particularly between diamond and non-diamond versions, a detail that even puzzled the Rolex boutique staff. Christianch's decision to opt for the diamond-set dial highlights a personal preference for understated luxury and prompts a discussion on the allure of platinum Rolex models.

Happy to share my latest arrival: a rolex day-date platinum.  I was looking for something truly special and I have
always admired the platinum day-date as both being discrete yet exclusive.

The first decision I had to face was about the dial: with or without diamond? I was initially drawn to the
traditional one with stick-markets. The dial colour is the typical platinum ice-blue that makes the watch very
special:

I have noticed a substantial colour difference in the diamond version: it is a more pale, muted ice-blue.
We did check in several catalogues and dial examples and the reasonable assumption is that the rolex ice-blue
color changed recently or the diamond version uses a different tone of ice blue ?

The watch is brand new from the rolex boutique  - there were also wondering about the difference (rolex-experts please let me know what the correct assumption is!) but they were sure that this was simply labelled, like  the non-diamond version "ice-blue"

the different tone of ice blue makes it very interesting and, even with diamonds, somehow discrete:

So I did go for the diamond one!  At natural light the more muted tone of the ice blue is more noticeable:

Back to the review: at this price point you can buy many interesting watches. A dual-tone Patek
Nautilus and really you have a lot of options. So why go for the platinum day-date rolex ?

I already own other watches in the "other" segment (Patek and Lange) and this might be unusual as I have seen more people
moving from rolex to patek, vacheron, AP, Lange etc. than the other way around ?!

I think that this watch -- and day-dates in general -- are very versatile and pretty much close to perfection. It is
a watch that you can wear with pretty much everything, is automatic, a chronometer and has two of the most useful
complications - the day and the date.

It is also widely recognisable yet the platinum version remains fairly special and exclusive.  It fits very well on my wrist
and it has something special that I might not have found in other brands.

The ice-blue (in this case a lighter, more muted ice-blue) is very interesting. I am intrigued by the choice
to reserve this dial only to the platinum version.

with different lighting the dial might appear light green or even light grey:

the bracelet is, like in pretty much every rolex, spectacular. I wasn't sure about the weight factor but I am already
getting used to the platinum and is certainly a great feeling on the wrist !

Thanks for reading and feel free to share your views on the dial and the watch!

But unfortunately let my go. Diamonds on the dial was what i had. Boy does it weigh a ton. I loved because i knew it was platinum but others i looks like steel. But upon observation it is clearly heavier than both white gold and steel and there is no steel president style bracelets. Bill

But it was in 2001 so it was a little different. Kept up to 2008 wore it every day like a sport watch. Lucky for me i kept the box and papers but only by chance as i did not move houses over the period. A real beauty you have. The diamonds blend in and just create a little glow. Bill

What leads to the purchase decision. Your choice is daring, and you ust be congratulated for that. Yes, the weight is something, on this Watch. I was surprised to be quickly used to it, when I tried it. Now, it is just a matter of taste: Some will finf the ice blue dial a tad girly, even more with diamonds, others will find it very cool. Daring, and cool. It is a Watch to try, to put on the wrist, if want to understand it. It is a " passion purchase ". Because, as you said it, at this price, the

certainly not for everyone but the weight and overall look and feel is extraordinary to me. It is my first watch in platinum and feels amazing. It requires a big budget but you get a lot of watch (and platinum) for the money so very happy about it!
