The yellow gold Daytona with the green dial. Most people call it the John Mayer Daytona.

John Mayer wore his 116508 quite a bit and talked about it in interviews and on social media. The combination of yellow gold and that green sunburst dial was pretty bold when Rolex introduced it at Baselworld 2016. Not the typical black or white dial Daytona most people think of. Mayer seemed to really champion it, and suddenly this relatively under the radar reference became the one everyone wanted.

What I find interesting is how one person's genuine enthusiasm can completely shift how collectors view a piece. The 116508 was already a beautiful watch. But Mayer's love for it seemed to unlock something. People started seeing it differently. That green dial against the warmth of yellow gold... the way it catches light... the vintage racing vibe with a modern twist.

I'd love to hear from anyone who owns one or has spent time with it. What drew you to the 116508? Do you think of it as the John Mayer watch, or does it stand on its own for you? And for those who were watching this reference before Mayer made it famous... did you notice a shift in how people talked about it?

It is a gorgeous watch in any and all cases.

Interesting the cover photo changes from 116508 to newer version when clicked into post…

I own the 116508 and love how the deep, emerald green looks with red rings around the sub dials. Sometimes it looks black and when light hits, it lit up. Green is the color of the brand and Daytona models are iconic, so I love it not for the nick name but for the combination of festive colors and the dial. Yes, this watch certainly became famous after the JM video. It was previously sitting on display and no one asked for it, according to my AD. I think the dial of “hulk” is the same emerald gre

I had trouble with image quality. Sorry. Never handle this beauty in the flesh.

What an amazing set of pictures vs my stock photo. Thanks for sharing. Bill

I prefer to call it the green dial Daytona.

John Mayer has a history of being so thirsty to have a watch named after him all-a Paul Newman whose Daytonas are affectionately named after. That being said one cannot deny the John Mayer had a major influence on the second hand prices of the watch. All it took was a spark from someone well known for the lemmings to jump off the bridge. I always felt it was always a rare watch. I remember when i was offered my white dial ceramic daytona you couldn’t get the green dial it was rare back then. It’

I love the color combo a lot .

I was offered one before JM did his thing with the watch on Social Media. I didn’t get it although I like it because my focus was more one the smaller independent pieces. I like the more understated watches that are somewhat different and overlooked but once they get attention like this watch and get hyped up i also loose interest tbh . Price went from decent to insanely high also . Still like it a lot tbh

My friend has the 126508, or the 'Mayer 2' as Hodinkee calls it...

...and I prefer it to this one. I like the contrast on the dial with the lighter subdials. The dial changes to almost black in the proper light. https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/hands-on-rolex-daytona-john-mayer

Honestly, I am more attracted by the watch per se. I don't really care about who owns or wear it. I just find that kind of details funny.
