Patekvcap's acquisition of the Rolex 'Smurf' Submariner in white gold highlights a significant milestone for many collectors: securing a long-awaited grail watch. This post delves into the allure of precious metal sports watches, a topic that continues to spark discussion among enthusiasts regarding value, wearability, and the evolving market dynamics for Rolex's most coveted references.

The Rolex Submariner reference 116619LB, known colloquially as the "Smurf," is a notable iteration within the Submariner Date collection, distinguished by its use of 18k white gold for the case and bracelet. This reference represents a premium offering, positioning itself above the stainless steel and two-tone variants through its precious metal construction and unique color combination. It was introduced as part of the updated Submariner generation featuring ceramic bezels and improved bracelets.
This model features a 40 mm Oyster case crafted from 18k white gold, paired with a matching Oyster bracelet. The watch is powered by the Rolex Caliber 3135, a self-winding mechanical movement known for its precision and durability, offering a power reserve of approximately 48 hours. Water resistance is rated to 300 meters, and the watch is fitted with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, protecting a blue dial.
The 116619LB appeals to collectors seeking a Submariner with a distinct aesthetic and material upgrade. Its blue dial and blue Cerachrom bezel, combined with the white gold, create a monochromatic yet luxurious appearance. This reference stands out in the Submariner lineup for its precious metal execution, offering a less overt display of luxury compared to yellow gold models while still providing the inherent value and feel of a gold watch.
attractive price. I couldn’t stand being without it so I stupidly went and bought another and the whole thing cost me a bit of money. But that’s what we do for our friends right? I should say former friend as I found out later when I saw him and asked about if was enjoying it, that he sold it and made some money on it he told me. He knew it cost me a pretty penny to get it to him so that didn’t sit well with me. Oh well . . . live and learn. Anyway I LOVE this watch. I am so happy and excited fo
A real favorite in my collection as well....
Photo taken the year it first came out.
For my part, I hesitate between I love I do not love ... the dial and the blue bezel have a fresh and original side. The gray metal is my preference compared to a yellow gold model. But there is something that blocks me, maybe because for me Rolex is steel ...
I understand your view about the steel as opposed to gold, being that those models are for sports, to make the most of them it is of course better to own them in steel (less maintenance), but if you can, the heft and feelts of gold is something magic.
Regarding the white Gold I agree with you. I have hesitate to buy the Pepsi when this watch was only available in gold... However, I missed my turn because of this hesitation .... I was happy when the steel model that I was lucky enough to acquire was released. The same goes for the stroumpf ... trial, hesitation, no purchase in the end ... The only one I could fall for is the pepsi meteorite dial because it has a special side that I love. I find its dial to be more "iron pyrite" than meteorite,
