Bernard Cheong introduces the Romain Jerome Cabestan, a watch that challenges conventional aesthetics with its "rusted" patina and controversial use of Titanic-sourced materials. His post delves into the emotional connection collectors can have with unique, high-horology pieces, even those that defy traditional notions of luxury and good taste. Cheong highlights the Cabestan's significance within the AHCI community and its dramatic market appreciation.
LOOK at the BOX!!
OK..so those of you who thought I was running around with my head stuck up my own backside endorsing Cartiers, Bulgaris and LV..well..I am still very much "into" the watches that I love with great emotional E.
I have recently stopped posting these AHCI watches that I am gunning for because the prices have come to DOUBLE what I paid for an Opus V and three times the MBF1. Which means...very few people live in this town!!!!
Anyway, if one says another word about buying a watch just because one likes the "box"...well...
Romain Jerome..
OK.I admit, it is a grave. It is sanctified. But...I like the rust. I like the overall "patina" it gives. I also wish they used just any metal rather than the Titanic..but they didnt.
First off...this is the MOTHER of all AHCI..and when Vianney first worked on it, those long enough here will recall I put my $$$ down for one!!!
For those lucky sons of... who bought the Opus 3 when I said so...wahoo..all systems are GO!!! hats of to the man who probably has my face on a dart board..Frederick Garinaud...see early 2009?!?!?

This one is cheaper..but you still get the BOX.

This one is for only telling day or nite...
You can guess how that works.
Cool enough, but the regulator collar is bloody cheap for such a watch..they have to get rid of that!!!

By this week..you guys and gals are gonna see the real pieces, taken with my phone for that touch of quality!!!

How many of them are real photos and how many computer generated ? Don
On the watch world. Bernards post reminded me that although I've seen plenty of press releases, with the usual icky CAD renderings, I've never once seen a picture of a real, in the flesh, watch. Maybe RJ is just a joke on all of us...to be broadcast on the first episode of Nicholas Hayek's Punqueé * Aaron * to Nicholas, Jerome and all others who actually speak French, I apologize for this word
For me, it's a total waste of energy and of talent. First of all, I like the idea of the Cabestan and I like the ideas of J.F.Ruchonnet. Even if sometimes, his ideas are too ambitious, he's a fascinating guy. But now, let's talk about Romain Jérome. I have to confess that the idea of using rust and material from the titnanic is for me the zero degree of horology. The Titanic, it's a large coffin with thousand of victims. What a morbid idea of using steel from this... And the Double Tourbillon ?
Did not hold it....just took 2 pics....
Firstly, the Cabestan - Vianney's greatest creation to date. Then, Romaine Jérome - the Sex Pistols of horology. Finally, the product itself: a crusty old cash register of a watch...nevertheless, a marvel of creative engineering; a completely new way to display time; and all encased profanely in sacred metal from one of our last century's most iconic moments. The fact that everyone is so outraged and sickened just makes me want one even more. Romaine Jérome are the Cubists, the Second Viennese S
