Hi all,

I recently got a pre-own Lange Datograph 1st Generation ( Ref : 403.032 ). The watch is a 2006 Datograph Rose gold with a silver dial. I even post an incoming thread here. To the best of my knowledge ( and the watch dealer that sold me the watch ), the watch has never been sent for service.

I was posting to my instagram  www.instagram.com about how how I find the case finishing very admirable and it has this exquisite brush / polished alternating finishing in the case. Here's a picture :

The "big" surprise was when others start to comment that their RG Datograph cases are all fully polished. This is so for 5 owners of the exact same ref that I have personally contacted and verified on instagram. I further learned that Lange don't actually made their own cases and are outsourced to third party. It's still not very clear to me if they are finished by Lange inhouse but for the same reference, how can there be two type of case finishing? Is mine an "oddball"? An accidental mistake? Yet another theory was that 1st Generation RG Datographs are all 100% fully polished because at that time, it was done to ensure better durability of the finishing but I don't see anything wrong with mine.

To be honest, I personally preferred the case finishing of mine and it looks more interesting but still I am very intrigued. So am posting here hoping to seek answers. And curious what is the side case finishing of your datographs if you own a 1st Generation RG Datograph?

About the A. Lange and Söhne Datograph 18kt Rose Gold Ref. 403.032

The A. Lange & Söhne Datograph reference 403.032 is a significant early iteration of the Datograph line, distinguished by its flyback chronograph and outsize date complication. This reference, introduced in the late 1990s, established the Datograph as a cornerstone of Lange's modern era, showcasing a unique blend of technical innovation and classical Saxon watchmaking aesthetics. It represents the initial vision for a highly legible and functionally robust chronograph from the brand.

This particular reference features an 18kt rose gold case with a diameter of 39mm and a thickness of 12.8mm. It houses the manual-wind caliber L951.1, known for its intricate finishing and column-wheel flyback chronograph mechanism. The movement provides a power reserve of 36 hours. A scratch-resistant sapphire crystal protects the silver dial, which is characterized by its prominent outsize date display at 12 o'clock and subsidiary dials for continuous seconds and 30-minute counter.

The 403.032 appeals to collectors interested in the foundational pieces of A. Lange & Söhne's contemporary revival, particularly those who appreciate the original design language and technical specifications of the Datograph. Its relatively compact dimensions for a chronograph of its complexity, combined with the rose gold and silver dial configuration, offer a classic yet distinctive presence. This reference predates later Datograph iterations with extended power reserves, marking it as a specific point in the model's evolution.

But yours is platinum not rose gold. Platinum has brushed case finishing.

That is to say, it could be a Ref. 403.432, which has the brushed case, but yours is missing the bracelet.

I think Lange started with quite a few outsourced components and then slowly start bringing everything in-house.

Hey BFP, nice to see you here! Have you seen a 403.432 with a brushed case somewhere?

The reason Lange buy cases is maybe to focus the full on movements, and dials of course.
