Nicolas (amanico) introduces the Ulysse Nardin Freak Cruiser, a significant evolution in the brand's avant-garde Freak series. His initial impressions highlight the watch's new case design, propeller-inspired bezel, and the refined Caliber UN 205 movement. This post sparked a lively discussion among collectors, eager to dissect the aesthetic and technical updates of this distinctive timepiece.
Finally!
You certainly remember Marcus' pictures and first impressions on this Watch. He had the opportunity to shortly see it.
A Watch which was not showed in the catalog, until... Now.
The Freak Cruiser is a totally, entirely new Freak.
You will, of course, notice the new case ( 45 mm big, which doesn't make a big difference with the 44, 5 mm of the Freak II, and which is exactly the same size than the Diavolo ), differently shaped, especially the lugs.
The bezel, too, adopts a new style, and seems to take its inspiration from a boat propeller.
The dial will not disorient the Freak Lovers, as you will still find the hour displayed by the lower bridge, while the minutes are above, " housing " the baguette movement.
One big difference will be noticed: There is no more central spin which you could feel and see through the sapphire glass.
Sweeter, it looses a bit the brutal character of the former versions. Good or bad, time will tell!
The movement is the Cal UN 205, a Dual Ulysse Escapement, with its two silicon wheels.
The Watch is available in rose gold:
And in white gold, too:
I have to confess that I much prefer the white gold version, which enhances the modern look of the Freak, which was and still is, in my opinion a concept Watch or a Watch concept.
Still, I don't know if I don' prefer the former version. The bezel style was not everybody's taste, and this new one won't be, either.
The case is nicely shaped, but the design of the bezel is not my taste.
The " hands " of the former version were more conceptual, I think.
It is hard to put in words, and to have a definitive judgement, before being able to see it in the flesh, and to " digest " it ( in the meaning of giving it a bit of time, to be used to it ).
What do you think?
Best,
Nicolas

Personally, I love the new "hands" design. This kind of minute bridge is more lightly looking, less heavy and the anchor matches really well the brand's theme. I love the new bezel too as it is smoother than the crenellated previous one. Yet it is not a big deal as both are very nice. Cheers Nicolas, Mark
Which one he prefers. As for the Freak owners, well, I think they need some time to be used to the new design. Interesting! Best, Nicolas
I guess there is a very different point of view from being an owner (or being interested since quite a period of time by the Freak colelction) and being newly interested in this watch line (which is clearly my case). these last days, I've been looking closely to the former Diavolo and this cruiser (which I understand to be aroutn K€.75?) and I understand what you meant about the different style of minute bridge. Anyway, since I've had this one in my hands, I really feel attracted by this Freak l
It is a bit longer than I thought... Yes, the Freak is a piece of Art, modern art, abstract. And a fascinating one! Why resist??? ;) Best, Nicolas
