Mach, a discerning collector, shares his firsthand impressions of the Vacheron Constantin 222 in stainless steel, offering a detailed comparison to its yellow gold counterpart. His insightful observations, accompanied by live photography, provide a valuable perspective on the watch's design nuances, particularly its wearability and the exquisite execution of its Calibre 2455/2. This article delves into why the stainless steel iteration has captured the attention of the horological community.

I previously had an opportunity to see the 222 in yellow gold last year in January at the Los Angeles boutique:

Love the size but it was a little too flashy and monotone for my tastes:

Fast forward to Friday, I finally had the opportunity to see it’s sibling dressed in steel at a non-AD:

The bracelet has this great tapered design but those of us with smaller wrists won’t be able to appreciate that once it’s on the wrist:

I love the thinness of the design at just under 8mm (7.95mm):

VC did a stunning execution of their calibre 2455/2:

Overall, I was quite impressed with this iteration!🤌 But for now, it’s only a dream!😢

About the Vacheron Constantin Historiques Ref. Historiques222

The Vacheron Constantin Historiques 222 is a re-edition that pays homage to a significant design from the brand's past. This model is part of the Historiques collection, which is dedicated to reinterpreting Vacheron Constantin's heritage pieces. The 222 stands out for its integrated bracelet design and distinctive monobloc-style case construction, reflecting a particular aesthetic prevalent in the 1970s. It represents a faithful recreation of its predecessor, updated with contemporary manufacturing techniques and materials while retaining the original proportions and character. This reference is a key offering within the brand's contemporary catalog that acknowledges its historical design language.

The case of the Historiques 222 is crafted from yellow gold, featuring a fluted bezel and a screw-down case back. It measures 37mm in diameter, a size that aligns closely with the original model and offers a balanced presence on the wrist. The watch is powered by an automatic movement, visible through a sapphire crystal case back, which provides a power reserve of approximately 40 hours. The dial is presented in a sunburst golden hue, complementing the warmth of the yellow gold case. A sapphire crystal protects the dial, ensuring clarity and scratch resistance.

This reference appeals to collectors interested in historically significant designs and integrated bracelet sports watches. It offers a distinct alternative within Vacheron Constantin's current offerings, providing a link to the brand's design evolution. The Historiques 222 is produced in a single material variant, emphasizing its direct connection to the original model's aesthetic. Its reintroduction underscores the enduring appeal of its design and its place in the lineage of luxury sports watches.

I only had the chance to try on the yellow gold version and was disappointed by the shape on my wrist: it didn't fit very well. Best, Emmanuel

The one question that you raise is with the comment that smaller wristed wearers will not be able to appreciate the tapered bracelet. What was the issue there?

You would think that there wasn’t any taper at all from the size. You wouldn’t appreciate it until you flipped your wrist over. It’s similar to my Alpine Eagle XPS, which only has a slight taper compared to the 222:

They were arguing that it would be cheaper rather than going through a boutique. I responded that there were plenty of VC pieces I would want to own!

Plus, one can easily tell it’s EWC by the rug!😉
