Bernard Cheong celebrates the 10th anniversary of Vianney Halter's Antiqua, reflecting on its profound impact on independent watchmaking and his personal collecting journey. His post positions the Antiqua not merely as a timepiece, but as a foundational art movement that transcended traditional horology, emphasizing its holistic design from watch to presentation box. This article offers a unique, personal perspective on a seminal piece in modern independent watchmaking history.

The ORIGINAL Halter Barnes watch in my home today.

It has also been a LONG journey for me. I am visibly tired, but happy.

I started as a Lange and Patek collector in the 80s and 90s. In between, I had many GPs and even am now writting a book for IWC, and completed with Wei Koh a book for UN. Wei did it as a part of his role as an editor of magazines, but for me, it was an interest, and  a favor for a great friend and a hero of mine..Rolf Schynder, and his family.

In the long journey, I discovered the Freak, and the friendship of Max Busser, who hade been so kind to fly to Singapore to be at my wedding aniversary!

I have also lost great friends..amomng them Gunther Blumlein, to ill health.

The journey of the AHCI, my own humble journey, is about finding a new mmeaning in this study of a passion..and it was certainly not about (1) marketing or (2) branding and (3) status of ownership..forwhat benefit a man in status from an unknown watch?

I found the Antiqua as the Halter Barnes watch in 1998, and the ownership privilege eluded me till 2003.

Today, this watch makes its PILGRIMAGE back to Vianney to celebrate its 10th birthday!!!1

Happy Birthday Antiqua...you are IMHO, the great grandaddy and the founding father watch that created the art movement away from the artisan....in TOTALITY..watch, case sculpture and movement and complication...the WHOLE..even to the BOX...read on below..

The Antiqua is the "Foundation Model of Future Anteneur".

It, the first Antiqua, is a study submission to the AHCI, an instantaneous calendar calculated for 100 years. 35 hour reserve, and perpetually stored in a 4 year power in a specific box, made by Vianney ..of a precious wood.

I sought this watch out, before it was deemed for regular production in 2003.

The watch requires 900 hours of handwork.  100 parts of 30 types.

104 rivets in solid gold.

Dials made of 9 elements (parts) each hand cut an dhand engraved..literally...

The hand made box alone is small, but dense ..with 300 parts..and weighs 1.75 Kg. Mine was made by Vianney, and today..its fabrication is handmade by a cabinet maker TOTALLY 100% in St Croix..Janveir's factory town.

This watch is simply incredible..in all its forms..

And commands one of the logest waiting lists in our country.

The Antiqua is about beauty, and about courage, away from the colder heart of commercerlism..pardon my spellings..

Having crossed to the world of art, spirit, and culture..and across the line os commerce/economics..and into this world..I have not looked back.

The journey continues with Max Busser..and with many others...
