33mm Heritage Zenith Star
The “All-Around-Great” Watch for Women

On-the-Wrist Review by Ping Tsai
Being well-rounded can afford you many privileges like greater adaptability, mass appeal and unscaled value. These factors can undoubtedly win you the most ideal positioning whether you are trying to win the hearts of minds of universities, top execs or would-be watch buyers. If you want to increase your chances of doing anything, be well-rounded.
When it comes to wristwatches, one that is well-rounded in terms of things like affordability, quality movement and finishing, brand name, and added features can have a huge advantage when buyers are trying to make choices. It isn’t always easy to find a lady’s watch that covers all the important bases for a respectable automatic watch but the 33mm Heritage Zenith Star comes remarkably close. Featuring a thin easy-to-wear case, a beautifully balanced dial, a display-back case, and an accessible pricepoint, the Heritage Star is without a doubt, an “all-around great watch” that incorporates tremendous value into a relatively small package. Let’s take a closer look at what makes this lady’s watch such an unquestionably good acquisition.
Many of us mull over the decision to buy a watch as we would if we were trying to decide whether or not to go to law school. We think about things like, “What are the benefits?”, “Will it be a good investment?”, “Is it a good fit for me?” and “Will I regret my decision?” Rarely do we come across a watch where the decision is as automatic as the movement that powers it. When it does happen though, as with the 33mm Heritage Zenith Star, it can be the ultimate satisfaction, like accepting a top paying job that has all the best benefits, a nice boss and a short commute. The Heritage Zenith Star provides for its owners, not only all the desirable physical virtues but an equal amount of mental and emotional fulfillment as well.
A Case Not Tied Down to Conventionalism
The cushion shape of the case gives a slightly less conventional look to a classically styled dial. Most women will find the 33mm width and 9.45mm thickness an ideal size that is both comfortable and adaptable. It is just small enough to still be feminine and attract those who tend to remain closer to the conservative end of the style spectrum. Yet the case is not overly scaled down that a younger modern audience would not find it appealing and exciting to wear.
Often cushion shaped cases end up defining the identity of a watch. But for the Zenith Star, the shape is almost secondary with such a prominent dial. For all intensive purposes, the watch is “circular”. The case merely serves as a supportive but non-interfering component of introduction.
Along with the gentle curves, sizing, light weight and especially thinness, the case plays a crucial role in the overall comfort of the Zenith Star. If not for the beauty of the piece which becomes all too easy to continuously stare at, one can easily forget that a watch is even being worn. Polished stainless steel allows the watch to take on a more formal look when it needs to but the simple approach keeps it in-check in terms of modesty.
Crown
The fluted crown is set with a blue cabachon-cut sapphire and complements the cool colors of the watch perfectly. It is just big enough for practicality purposes and to add detail and interest to the case in whole but not overpowering. A crown such as the one found on the Zenith Star, that is easy to grip and operate is a greatly appreciated feature for mechanical watch owners who are winding their watches on a frequent basis. When the crown is well-designed and comfortable to use, winding can be a fun activity to look forward to every day. When it’s too small and almost painful to use, winding can be a chore. For the Zenith Star, the task seemed more like a reward.
The Gift of Transparency
Flipping the watch over reveals one of the most prized assets of the Zenith Star – a sapphire caseback which proudly displays the exquisitely finished movement. This may not be such a big deal on an automatic men’s watch but it is indeed rare on a woman’s watch. Automatic movements in women’s watches in general are uncommon to begin with, so to have transparent casebacks to display these movements is even more uncommon. The sapphire caseback is a primary contributing factor to making the Zenith Star the “All-Around-Great” watch that it is. Simply put, at the price-point which this watch is set at, it would be extremely difficult to find another women’s watch with this feature, and certainly not with all the additional elements that it offers.
A Dial Set in Circular Balance
If the characteristics mentioned so far haven’t been enough to convince you, then you will surely be won over by the Zenith Star’s highly likable dial – likable because everything about it has been done right. Visual harmony in the face of a watch is dependent on attributes like balance, proportion, and symmetry. When the formula is done right, an overall pleasing visual sense of beauty can be attained.
And this sense of balance is clearly accomplished in the Zenith Star. The dial features classic dark blue Roman numerals with leaf minute and hour hands in polished stainless steel to complement the case. Diamond hour markers dot the outer edge of the dial adding a feminine touch and giving it a more upscale look. Often a subdial can throw off the balance on a dial. The seconds subdial on the Zenith Star blends in quite gracefully with the rest of the face. Its subtlety doesn’t fight with the prominence of the darker elements and instead almost camouflages with its simplicity.
The finishing on the dial base consists of exquisite silver-toned guilloché “flinqué-froissé” exhibiting a fine textured wave effect spreading out from the center point. The ripples of light that are created reflect in different directions, giving it dimension and movement that is simply mesmerizing to look at. What makes the dynamic dial on the Heritage Zenith Star a successful and beautiful design is how elements are so well balanced. Roman numerals and hands are prominent but matched with subtle diamond hour markers. waves are radiating from the center but they are also anchored by the diamonds.
Manufacture-Made Movement
The 33mm Heritage Zenith Star is powered by an exceptionally precise and reliable automatic movement: Elite Calibre 681, manufactured entirely in-house. At 3.47 mm in height and 25.60 mm wide, this ultra-thin movement beats at a frequency of 4 Hz and has a power reserve of over 50-hours. It also consists of 128 components and 27 jewels. Visible through the sapphire caseback are the gear trains and the oscillating weight adorned with a Côtes de Genève motif and the Zenith signature star cutout. Some movements aren’t necessarily display-worthy but they are shown anyways. With the Zenith Star, it will be difficult for owners to resist the urge to show the back of the watch even before giving a visual tour of the front.
With Zenith’s history of being the first true watch Manufacture, it has been able to exercise creative aspirations in horology and produce watch movements like the Elite Calibre 681 entirely in-house. Another major determining factor for the Zenith Star’s well-roundedness, the in-house movement is an incredibly valuable aspect to have, especially in a women’s watch. Having specially made thin movements that can be used for smaller female cases and models tends to be a rarity among major brands and even unseen at the price tag that the Zenith Star is offered at. Other comparable watches from equally known and respected brands are likely to go for double the price for the same mechanical and artistic quality.
In the 33mm Heritage Zenith Star, the Elite Calibre 681 gets its first pass in a ladies watch. Previously it was reserved for the 40mm Heritage Ultra Thin which is more of a men’s watch. Surprisingly, the movement works equally well in both size cases. Although it probably achieves a slightly better visual balance in the 33mm size as opposed to the 40mm which has a bit more empty space towards the center of the dial.
Comfort in Strap & Fit
It may be difficult to find an automatic ladies watch that trumps the comfort of the Heritage Zenith Star. The ultra-thin construction and petite cushion case has a great deal to do with this no doubt, as does the slender alligator leather strap and close fitting lugs. The charcoal blue strap comes with protective rubber lining and a steel pin buckle detailed with the Zenith star.
In Conclusion
Zenith was smart to make a small, thin movement in the Elite Caliber 681 that would be versatile enough to work in mens’ and ladies models. Changing up the shape of the case gives it a different identity while at the same time giving the Heritage line a more modernized alternative to their “retro-looking” watches.
For the female who is looking for a serious mechanical watch, Zenith has more to offer than practically any other brand on the market. The technical watch ingenuity that is devoted to women is unmatched in the luxury wristwatch industry. And with the 33mm Heritage Zenith Star priced at a very affordable $5000, buyers will get that “All-Around Great” watch at a great value. Comfort, classicism, aesthetic beauty, versatility, value and a manufacture movement - what more can a girl ask for?

That I go to save as a reference for a great and detailed review. About the watch, it's gorgeous and my only "problem" is to hide your review from my wife and daughter or I go to hear the scary "I want!" twice. Congratulations to Zenith and to you. Nilo
I was very close to purchasing the piece myself, only watch that I have reviewed and actually wanted to buy...aside from the Serpenti. It's such a great watch for any woman, can't stress that enough. Thanks for your comments.
I have been looking for a new "every day watch" for my wife. Problem solved and I'll order Heritage Zenith Star still today. I have been buying during the past four years a couple of watches for my wife: 2 x JLC Reverso, 2 X Rolex, 3 x Patek and Breguet's Reine de Naples. The only real "daily beater" is her Rolex Yacht-Master and I have been looking for a high quality watch with manufactured automatic movement. Now I found it! Thank you. Best, Kari
as a husband who buys so many great watches for her :) I think the Zenith will be the perfect addition to her collection. Would love to see some wrist shots once you have it :)
A wrist shot will follow as soon as my wife gets the watch. But first she has to carry our baby to the bitter end... One day I'll send a collection of wrist shots of her watches. The title could be "selected by the husband". Best, Kari
and it looks great in metal. Furthermore, it is so slim. There's only one thing I do not understand: how can it be so affordable. Anyhow, I bought some Cartier jewelry for my wife after our daughter was born. So I will give this watch as a birthday present on 1st May. Or should I give it already today because it is the Women's Day. Best congratulations to all Ladies! Kari
