📖 About This Reference

The Omega Seamaster Reference 298.80 stands as a quintessential example of the Seamaster line during its formative years, produced between 1956 and 1962. This era predates the collection's eventual pivot towards dedicated professional dive watches, instead showcasing Omega's vision for a robust yet elegant timepiece suitable for daily wear and occasional aquatic activities. It embodies the "Pre-Diver/Dress Seamaster" archetype, offering a refined aesthetic with practical resilience, establishing the foundational versatility that would define the Seamaster name for decades to come. The design of the Reference 298.80 is characterized by its understated mid-century elegance. Encased in a 34 mm stainless steel case, it reflects the typical dimensions of a sophisticated men's watch of the period. A clean silver dial provides a timeless backdrop, often featuring applied indices and dauphine hands, contributing to its versatile appeal. With a water resistance rating of 50 meters, the watch was designed to withstand splashes and light immersion, making it a reliable companion for the active gentleman without sacrificing its dress watch sensibilities. Powering the Seamaster 298.80 is Omega's automatic Caliber 503, an in-house movement recognized for its reliability and precision. This caliber belongs to a significant family of self-winding movements that solidified Omega's reputation for mechanical excellence in the post-war era. For collectors, these early Seamasters hold considerable appeal, representing a pivotal moment in horological history where everyday utility met classic design. They are valued for their enduring style, robust engineering, and their place as the elegant progenitors of what would become one of the most iconic and diverse watch collections in the world.

Old man and the sea part 2 - trying to sort my son’s fishing equipment 🎣
Fishing in the East provided a successful, efficient experience where the son caught tons of fish quickly. Trying Mediterranean fishing was less successful, resulting in no catch. The Omega Seamaster 1948 watch remained unaffected.

Vintage watch in need of repair left with local expert after failed service attempt by father, now deceased. Trust restored authenticity to be sourced, but other parts may not be restored. Watchmaker taking time. Two other watches out for service.

Dials for the Melbourne Olympic Seamaster ref OT 2850
Variants of SM Olympic dials include rare XVI dial with pearl dots in yellow gold, most have a brass plate. Some dials may have rings with uniquely colored areas; accuracy debatable.
