📖 About This Reference

The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean collection, first introduced in 2005, represented a significant evolution in Omega's professional dive watch offerings, designed for serious saturation diving with enhanced water resistance and robust construction. The reference 2901.50.37 is an early and quintessential example of the 42mm Planet Ocean, setting the standard for the line's deep-diving capabilities and distinctive aesthetic. Positioned above the Seamaster Professional 300m, the Planet Ocean series distinguished itself with a substantial 600m water resistance rating, underscoring its commitment to professional underwater exploration. The 42mm stainless steel case of the Planet Ocean 2901.50.37 presents a purposeful and substantial profile, characteristic of its professional diver lineage. Encircling the black dial is a unidirectional rotating bezel, crafted from black aluminum, a key identifier of these initial Planet Ocean references before the advent of ceramic inserts. The dial itself is highly legible, featuring bold luminous broad arrow hands and applied hour markers, ensuring optimal readability in low-light conditions. A date aperture is discreetly positioned at 3 o'clock, while a slightly domed sapphire crystal protects the display. Further enhancing its professional credentials, a helium escape valve is integrated into the case band at the 10 o'clock position, essential for saturation diving. Powering the reference 2901.50.37 is an automatic chronometer movement, notably incorporating Omega's revolutionary Co-Axial escapement. This technological innovation, championed by George Daniels, significantly reduced friction and improved long-term accuracy and service intervals, elevating the performance of Omega's mechanical movements. As one of the foundational references of the Planet Ocean series, the 2901.50.37 holds a special place for collectors, representing the original vision for Omega's top-tier professional diver before subsequent design updates and material changes. Its combination of a robust build, professional diving specifications, and pioneering Co-Axial technology makes it a highly regarded and collectible piece within the broader Seamaster family.

Not quite as rare as the "Golden Seamaster" Desmond wrote about, but in the ballpark and especially in Rose Gold:

Old man and the sea part 2 - trying to sort my son’s fishing equipment 🎣
Fishing in the East provided a successful, efficient experience where the son caught tons of fish quickly. Trying Mediterranean fishing was less successful, resulting in no catch. The Omega Seamaster 1948 watch remained unaffected.

My Grandfather's Watch
Vintage watch in need of repair left with local expert after failed service attempt by father, now deceased. Trust restored authenticity to be sourced, but other parts may not be restored. Watchmaker taking time. Two other watches out for service.

Dials for the Melbourne Olympic Seamaster ref OT 2850
Variants of SM Olympic dials include rare XVI dial with pearl dots in yellow gold, most have a brass plate. Some dials may have rings with uniquely colored areas; accuracy debatable.
