The "Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch - Alaska Project": In the early 1970's NASA was considering exploring the dark side of the moon. Omega created a team to develop an outer case for their Speedmaster watch to withstand the extreme temperatures of outer space. Omega named the project the "Alaska Project". NASA however declared the watch in its original design would suffice, thus the results remained a prototype. Omega has now released the watch in a limited edition. This watch features:White dial with black hands. The hour & seconds sub-dial hands are triangular counterweight hands AKA "Apollo Hands". Brushed & polished Stainless Steel Case & bracelet. Chronograph/Stopwatch. Black fixed tachymeter scale bezel. The Case Back bears the following inscription "Limited Series, Alaska Project 50m/167ft , Flight Qualified by NASA for all Manned Space Missions. xxxx/1970. The watch is provided with a large (57mm in diameter x 23mm thick) red-anodized aluminum outer case (color chosen for maximum temperature protection) - allowing the watch to be worn between -148 C to +250 C.
