Description

A dozen or so trade offers and 2 failed "I'll take its" later, I'll go ahead and reduce the price on this one. Now reduced from $14,500 to $10,750 (which is far, far less than I paid for this timepiece).

Unless one's slipped past me, this may well be the first Paul Gerber Retro Twin with Paul's in-house dynamic power reserve which has been offered for sale online (or anywhere else for that matter). In fact, it's quite a feat to locate even basic scans of this timepiece online.

For those unfamiliar with this timepiece, Paul agreed to create a limited run of 20 of his Retro Twin with power reserve (regardless of metal) circa 2005, and stuck to his guns on that promise. They were, as I understand it, snapped up immediately and never truly hit the open market. I suspect this because I wanted to obtain one at that time but was unable to locate a single example anywhere in the world until 3 years later when I lucked into buying one off the wrist off the owner (who happens to own a high end watch retailer in the United States).

In any event, I have a few too many timepieces in the stable so I've decided to make mine available for sale. There's been plenty written about the base-model Retro Twin online, including Curtis' wonderful study of Paul's creation of this masterpiece, so I'll leave most of the information to Google for those inclined to better understand the many unique characteristics of both sides of the watch.

To me, this watch is quite simply the most fun you can have at or anywhere near this price range. The movement - while beginning life as a Peseux 7001 - is for all intents and purposes a manufacture movement. Paul (i) significantly increased the size of the movement, (ii) bumped up the number of jewels from 17 to 27, (iii) changed it from a manual wind to his patented double rotor system with dual platinum rotors, and (iv) created all of the new wheels, pinions, cams, bridges and screws at his atelier. The dial, which really has to be viewed live to fully appreciate its depth, is also created in-house.

I often find it difficult to choose a side of the timepiece at which to marvel. The front offers views of Paul's in-house dynamic power reserve (the inner dial register moves as the watch is wound, while the power reserve hand moves as the power runs down), beautifully blue'd hands and the in-house retrograde small seconds, which snaps back to zero at 60 seconds with incredible precision. The watch is truly alive at all times and in all ways. The backside, though, offers the opportunity to watch the platinum double rotors spin to and fro just barely missing one another with each rotation. Regardless of side, Paul's case is a work of art in and of itself.

IMHO, this is a modern-day genius in the world of haute horology at his very best, and at a price which is significantly less than entry level for his new line of simple, time-only timepieces. My example is in yellow gold, and comes with all boxes, papers and certificates. The watch has been worn very sparingly and carefully, and as such is in wonderful condition.

Price is $13,150 shipped anywhere in the world, plus the cost of insurance if you'd like me to purchase it. I accept wire transfers and/or money orders. Plenty of references available. Feel free to e-mail me at dmgreen11 at yahoo dot com with any questions.

Of the 10 watches that I rotate I only have 2 that have Arabic Numbers. The rest are Roman or just markers or both.
Reflecting on their watch collection, the author discusses their inclination towards Roman over Arabic numerals, seeking reader opinions on numeral preferences.

Grail - Paul Gerber
I've visited and met many members of the AHCI over the years. But there was one I've always wanted to meet - but never had.
