📖 About This Reference

The Rolex Explorer II reference 16550 represents a transitional period for the model, bridging the gap between the vintage four-digit references and the modern five-digit iterations. It introduced significant updates while retaining some classic elements. This reference is notable for being the first Explorer II to feature a sapphire crystal and a quickset date function, enhancing its practicality and durability compared to its predecessors. It also marked the introduction of the caliber 3085 movement. This reference features a 40 mm stainless steel case, characteristic of Rolex's robust sports watches. It is equipped with the automatic caliber 3085, which provides a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. The watch maintains a water resistance of 100 meters and is protected by a sapphire crystal, a key upgrade from the acrylic crystals found on earlier Explorer II models. The fixed 24-hour graduated bezel is also made of stainless steel. For collectors, the 16550 is particularly appealing due to its transitional nature and the presence of both white and black dial variants. The white dial versions are sometimes referred to as 'cream dials' due to a tendency for the lacquer to age into a creamy patina, making these examples highly sought after. This reference offers a blend of vintage aesthetics with modern technical advancements, making it a significant piece in the Explorer II lineage.

2 interesting Rolex Explorer II Ref 16570.
One for its condition and patina of the indices, from 1992: The second one, Black AND Rail, which is quite unusual for this reference, less unusual for a 16650. Forget the poor condition of the dial, the interest of this watch is educational. BUT I have to say that I very rarely saw a Black Rail 165

Evolving taste
For the fans of this model, here’s a pic of my 16570. I post this for two reasons. 1. It’s what I’m wearing today 2. Over time I’ve grown to really love the thinness of this watch. For years I never minded height on a watch. (Offshore, big pilot , crosswind, sea dwellers, etc. But during the last ye

Rolex Explorer II 16570: Two special ones, featuring the same interesting detail.
Indeed, both are rail dial, the cream and the black. While both dials should go in a 16550. But for a short, very short time, and at the beginning of the 16570 life, those dials can be found. Here they are: Cream ( credit Tempus Orologi ) Black ( credit Lunar Oyster ) Very interesting! Best, Nicolas

A curiosity: Rolex Explorer II 16550 Prototype.
Here are the pictures, to be credited to Antiquorum. I am not very comfortable with such offers. I always find weird that a Rolex Proto can be found on the market, and this dial does nothing to me... I much prefer a good old rail dial for that reference... What about you? Best, Nicolas

Rolex 16550 with black lumedot surroundings
As I've been offered this watch recently I've wondered if Rolex ever delivered the 16550 with black lumedot surroundings and black hands. The watch is from 1987 - so it was produced two years before the 16570 was released. My conclusion is that it has to be a service dial and the strong patina has t

Rolex Explorer II 1655: A shot of the day.
I am in my Explorer mood, lately, taking oictures of the Cream Rail 16550 and, now, today, this 1655. Let's keep in mind that the 1655 is not a GMT, at the contrary of the 16550. Its big orange hand gives the time on 24 hours, for those who spend several days in dwells, and who loose the notion of d
