“Managers do things right, leaders do the right thing” Stephen Covey
My experience with Chopard reflects Stephen Covey’s idea of part of what makes a leader. Certainly leadership starts at the top and is reflected throughout the hierarchy of the business.
In an earlier post in January I wrote of the trials of my 16/8331 Mille Miglia. The watch had been put through a series of inadvertent trials that no watch really should endure and come out in one piece. In summary, it never worked vey well and spent a great deal of time in the repair facility. The misadventures of the watch are too numerous to list again but the crux of the matter is that I needed to make a decision about whether or not to retire to watch for good. The watch had gone missing for over five months and I had tried to think of everything possible about where it ended up, where I did not look was in the flower bed near the sidewalk to my garage.
When removing some leaves from the bed I noticed something shiny….my watch. It had been exposed to rain, snow, ice, extreme heat, cold and had landed in the flower bed after taking a bounce or two on the concrete walkway. The watch was a mess. The attached picture tells the story, (my apologies about the quality of the photo, it is eerily reminiscent of the condition of the watch). I had decided that the watch was finished, it’s time was up.
It turns out that PuristSPro moderator Kong had read of my story with some interest and one thing led to another. Rather then end in an inglorious state to its lifetime, my watch is now fully restored to its original condition, now a very valuable, sentimental and key part of my expanding collection. The watch was returned to Chopard in Switzerland and was completely rebuilt to original specifications. It looks beautiful as the attached photos will attest and is keeping perfect time.
The tale of the watch made it to no less than the very top management of Chopard. My sincere thanks to Kong for his interest and to Chopard for doing “the right thing”! There are many people that were involved in the watch restoration and to them I am extremely grateful. I really cannot express enough thanks; the best way is to tell this wonderful story here in this context. The customer service at Chopard was truly exceptional, the best customer service that I have ever received, from anywhere; Chopard has earned a customer for life!
