8171 Padellone...

 

New in the house is this so called Padellone [Big Pan] in yellowgold with reference number 8171. No valjoux based movement was used as we see in the chrono's but it's own manufacture caliber in a special big snap on case, limited production as been said in circa 1000 examples were produced from 1949 to 1952 in 18K yellow or pink gold, as well as some models in stainless steel. Super elegant watch to wear and before i got hooked on vintage Sport Rolex my heart went to these kind of complications....

Mine has an early number and some nice patina on the dial and it's size with 38 mm diameter and 46 mm from lug to lug is impressive and must have been hudge for the time Rolex offered it as we see here:

This is how Rolex looked to the moon in '49...no smile, probably still bitter from the WWII ;- ( With a little help from Photoshop i just turned the mouth 180 degrees to let it smile ;- )...

What's not to love your Vintage Rolex? It is dressy, in a super condition, with a lot of charm. What more do you want? I have to confess that I didn't know this model, but it is always interesting to see Rolex Which are different from the Professional Lin...

Yep, a very watch. The case seems to be good, not over polished... I love the black/red/black/red quantiem; hands and indexs are so quaint! And for finish I love the "light Tuxedo" dial. Enjoy your new vintage Rolex! quentin

greatly appreciate your comment on the watch. One thing to point out and by no means i am correcting you, instead of a roulette it is an all red date wheel. I hope that the red date on this watch makes everyday a holiday, this watch is a gift for someone ...
