A look at the Peter Speake-Marin Thalassa
Peter Speake-Marin recently presented his Thalassa with the new SM2 movement and I managed to capture some photos of it. The Thalassa looks far better in the metal than in photos.

Especially notable is its slimness, at about 1.5 mm slimmer than the earlier PSM Piccadilly watches but 42 mm wide, it cuts a very elegant profile on the wrist. Though the dial (blue and open centre) is not to my taste, the movement is brilliant.
The finishing on the SM2 is magnificent and the German silver bridges possess the distinctive colour of the material. The architecture of the SM2 is also stunning, with sweeping lines that give the impression of movement and a little bit of aggression. I like the barrel click (below), which is the only traditional element in the movement design. Even the unseen elements are carefully conceived, the keyless works for instance are elegant and sturdy.
The movement is entirely of Peter's design, and all its components are specifically made for the SM2, meaning it does not share any parts with other calibres - it is entirely proprietary. Consequently this is at a higher price point at previous Speake-Marin watches.
I applaud Peter's move to create a solid, beautifully made movement. I look forward to seeing what he has in store for 2011.
