Ulysse Nardin

A quick look at the Ulysse Nardin Blue Sea Diver watch

BLUE SEA and Cool!

When I think of marine colours the first that comes to mind is blue. In the past Ulysse Nardin have incorporated nautical themes and visions of blue seas with their diver timepieces. During Baselworld 2012 the manufacture introduced the Blue Sea watch. This novelty is a limited edition series of 999 pieces worldwide. Below are a few photos and brief overview of this attractive sports watch. Full credits once more to my friend John for these excellent photos.

Best wishes,

The Ulysse Nardin Blue Sea presentation box is made of natural pear wood. It's  dimensions are essentially the standard size box that comes with many of UN's mens watches. The key difference is the black colour. This box has a glossy varnished finish and well constructed —a premium quality watch box appropriate for storing fine wristwatches. The watch 'pillow' is a leather (like) material and adjustable. Polished steel hinges opens and locks the box securely.

The Blue Sea watch itself is hefty and is of solid construction. The core of the case material is stainless steel and coated with a durable vulcanized rubber material that is scratch-resistant. Handling the watch case surface there is a gummy-rubber feel to the touch and when the watch is worn on the wrist. The crystal on this watch is sapphire with anti-relectant coating. The dial has a smooth textured wave pattern. The watch bezel rotates counter-clockwise easily with a smooth motion and audible clicks. Note the wave pattern design on the bezel as well as the rubberized finish against the metal markers. The watch hand is skeletonized with blue SuperLuminova as well as the large hour markers on the dial. At the 12-hour the solid blue hand marks the power-reserve display. At the 6-hour the smaller skeletonized hand marks the sub-seconds. The date window is magnified for legibility.

This side photo of the case profiles the small groves of the bezel, and how short the lugs are on this watch. The water resistant rating is 200-metres and the case size is officially listed at 45.8mm. The Blue Sea does not feel like a big watch on the wrist due to this short-lugs. The screw-down crown has the Ulysse Nardin anchor emblem on it and is also rubberized. It's styling reminds me of a column-wheel component of a chronograph movement with its spokes.

The display case-back crystal is sapphire. The Blue Sea employs the UN cal. 26 automatic movement. This movement has been used extensively for several Ulysse Nardin various diver watch series for a few years now. It's base is an ETA ebauche that UN reworks most of the parts and the result is accuracy and long-term reliability. The movement beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour. The power-reserve is rated at 42 hours. In the Blue Sea watch, most movement parts are finished with a dark blue colour. Another consistent design element of this watch.

The rubber straps used for this watch are made of a flexible silicon compound. Created with a design motif consistent with the watch dial's wave patterns. This rubber material does not have any fragrance and is neutral in smell. The ceramic elements along each side of the straps are marked in blue type with the words Limited Edition at one side and
Ulysse Nardin on the other side. The deployant folding clasps are a combination of ceramic material and PVD stainless steel that competes these attractive finishing details.
