Girard Perregaux

A unique design needs no name on the dial...

G'day,

some time ago there was a statement in the watch literature that good design does not need a brand name, but it should stand out of the ordinary and be recognizable for it?s uniqueness.

I don?t know if anyone noticed, but one of GP?s most famous watches doesn?t bear a visible signature (it does, but it?s tiny and you really have to look very closely at close distance):

I think it?s been made this way for a reason.
Now this watch was very special then and still is special today. And one might say fine craftmanship does speak for itself; to do such a watch case means extreme efforts and much skills, which isn?t done for anything less than extraordinary. When it was made, printing a brand or individual name on the dial was not usual; the markets apparently appreciated a certain understatement. So it might speak for itself, even if there are similar cases and similar dials by other makers.
But in fact "Esmeralda" is often referred to as one of the most unique creations ever and there is no doubt who the maker is:

I think many GP models, like the Cat?s Eye models or the Vintage45 range, do bear this DNA. These are creative designs, even if not fitted with a Three Gold Bridges Tourbillon movement. But from a distance and without having a chance to read the name on the dial, the Cat?s Eye and the Vintage45 are pretty unique and instantly recognizable as a watch made by Girard-Perregaux.
The same goes for models by JeanRichard like the TV Screen and the Paramount range:

And that?s something i like a lot!

Greetings from germany,

Peter
