Calling on the Panerai expert! Which would you choose?
Dear fellow purist, Panerai is a brand I still wonder why I do not own yet and I have been thinking of getting a Panerai for a while now. I am no expert between all their models but two of them picked my interest. First I am looking for no date, small seconds and 4 Arabic numeral layout (which I find pleasing). I focused on a steel case for the weight for now (not sure I would enjoy the light weight of carbon fiber or titanium). I think one of the reason I have yet to own one is I believe they are far from chronometer performance but I could be wrong (think they are more around +-10sec/day). So far my top two would be PAM 739 and PAM 995 (pictures from Panerai website). I believe PAM 739 is a limited edition so I may not even be able to find one!
Which would you recommend and why? Thanks in advance!

Yes i think i am leaning there. However at first i associated Panerai signature with the lock on top of the crown which the 995 does not have.
So do you think the 995 is more likely to stand the test of time i guess?
I would suggest.....
to look for a Fiddy NOS (a.k.a. PAM127), which would satisfy both your requirements. 3-6-9-12+second counter and guard bridge. For the first Panerai, I it would be just great. If it were to become the first and....last....it would be an even better choice...

a Panerista, let alone a Panerai purist but the...only...similarity the PAM674 and the PAM127 share is the...PANERAI on the dial. The 127 is considered one of the icons of the brand and exudes tradition. The other, the 674, is a "pretty" commercial model,...

I understand your point about the 674 vs 127 where my initial thinking was purely based on the high level dial layout...but I also agree the 127 exude something special not present in the 674

Don't you think a first Panerai needs that typical crown guard? The "green" one (sorry Paneristi for my lack of knowledge of Panerai references😣) is very, very nice, yes, but as a second or third Panerai in a collection.

Now that you mentioned It, I think I recall that evolution also. Do I get away with it to say: a modern (!) Panerai needs a Crown guard?
Glad i am not the only one with that question. Though between the two references i quoted in the opening post i could see how the green one could become more "timeless"
I think for me the question i probably need to answer first is will I be able to live with a watch with a rate accuracy far from a chronometer performance. I guess i kind of already partially answered that one by the very existence of this thread!
Chrono, you should not stress on time accuracy for a watch with dial with no minute markers 😊

In any case since I would rarely wear more then two days in a row anyway the rate accuracy becomes less relevant! This will likely become more of week-end watch or casual watch - thank you for your input

I think automatic on the dial of any classic pam is an eyesore, less of a problem on the submersible. As a daily wear the crown lever is less of a hassle than the screwed down crown, however the 995 is an auto so the point is moot. If you like green the p...

I am starting to conclude that the vintage feel of the dial layout and dome crystal for some of these like the 127 is really what I am after here...hence leaning toward the 995

One distinction that does not seem to be acknowledged here . . .
is the fact that the watches you are looking at both have sandwich dials and not sausage dials. I have always preferred sandwich dials, but I notice some of the recommendations here may include sausage dials. Having said that, I have had about a dozen PAM...
