Earth Cruising with Hummingbird and Hibiscus

We started early and had a nice sunshiny morning, compared to our last walk. The planes were flying west rather than landing in a fog bank.

Flowers seem to go in batches in neighborhoods -- a certain plant like these Hibiscus come into fashion with the gardeners or homeowners, and everyone has to have a few, until (for example) white roses become the favorite.

What's hiding behind the flowers?

I thought I was in California?!

Someone likes old Fords.

And hibiscus.

We stopped for a few moments and chatted with an older lady who owns the second-biggest home in the area. We both used the same native plant gardener to start our yards about 20 years ago.

But hers is more like Narnia... if you know the books by CS Lewis.

Lion, Lampost, Wardrobe?

No, a protective dog with unhappy eyes kept a watch on us to make sure his mistress was safe.

We moved along!

I liked the sympathetic shapes of pine cones and succulents.

Ouch.

There's the white Eldorado that was hiding (if such a monster can "hide") behind the hibiscus and the Mustang.

Yes, there are other flowers around this morning too.

Coming around the corner on the next street we were scolded loudly from the Cape Honeysuckle bush. After a bit of searching we found the guardian of this yard (one of them).

Here's the next one. Hummingbirds are extremely terrritorial birds, and will squeak / squawk / chirp until you move along.

I pretended to be interested in this old pole, and was thinking if I had a nice big house, I wouldn't want my power to come through this transformer and these wires!

The hummer reappeared above my head and told me to shove off...

This is the nice big house fed by those feeble wires. It's bigger and nicer than the Narnia house -- it's called the Sefton Mansion.

Many years ago they sold off part of the grounds, including the stables and garages. I put in a bid but then thought better of it - living in here, in the shadows of the palms and the big house could be depressing.

Of course if I'd bought the stables I'd have room to park more vehicles, like this Earth Cruiser.

Architectural styles are SO VARIABLE in this area!

We left the mansion hilltop and descended into the canyon on a busier road, where we saw the house NO ONE wants to buy in earthquake-prone California. "No thank you, I won't step into the sun room."

One of my favorite trees. I always smile when I see this.

But we usually see it while driving by -- this is the first time I've walked under it!

and then we came to more Hibiscus.

and presumably the truck of a duck hunter.

and a neighbor who loves these yappy little dogs...

and probably the 20th dog walker of the morning.

The Tale Ends Here.

Thanks for walking with us.
