Never been in my radar in the past. Perhaps due to all the “negativities” I read about this timepiece. And I do get swayed by such opinion sometimes.
While I like the GMT2, I find the PCL too much and scratch-prone and do get conscious when I wear one during travel. Honestly, I didn’t derive any enjoyment wearing that watch. Hence, the search for a comparable Rolex timepiece which I have recently found on the Explorer 2.
Unfortunately, the scarcity of the Rolex sport watches has made the Explorer 2 a bit elusive nowadays. But I know it’s not as bad as the Subs and the GMTs in terms of availability. Recently, I was promised by my AD that I’ll get one as soon as one arrives. I’m pretty excited!
I thought I am set for the black dial. I find it to be rarer and the three phantom hands (hour, minute and GMT) make this watch a unique Rolex timepiece and a conversation starter. In addition, the orange GMT hand does stand out with the black dial. Beside, the original one of 1971 was a black dial Explorer 2. So it has some history going on for this watch.
But this one that I happened to chance upon made me rethink about the black dial. Not mine but from a friend where I tried it on to see how the 42mm will wear on my wrist. I love it. And I’m not so sure anymore on the black dial. I still have a couple of weeks before I make my final decision. Any inputs will be much appreciated.
Have a great week!
