Ulysse Nardin

I just got back from Basel today. The Sonata is a BEAUTY!!! Here's my review of it.

I had an appointment with UN and met up with a UN rep. We went up to the 2nd floor in the booth, and sat down at his table. My wife and I chatted with him for around an hour and a half. Very friendly, helpful, and informative gentleman. We both got a nice box of UN chocolates as parting gifts Yum Yum! To cut the chase short, let me get straight to the point. Everything below is what the UN rep told me. If anything is incorrect, please feel free to correct me cause I'm writing this all from memory.

The UN Sonata is a BEAUTY !!! Pictures do NOT do the watch justice. I played around with the yellow gold version and instantly fell in love!

UN is telling its dealers not to push the watch too heavily right now because it's not 100% ready right now. And cause of this, the UN rep didn't want to give me any promo materials on the Sonata, if there were any available to start with. UN still needs to do more testing and doesn't want the same thing happening to this watch as what happened with the Freak. The Freak attracted a lot of attention when it was first publicized, but wasn't ready for deliver until after an extended period of time.

Watch is 42mm, and the yellow gold prototype which I played with did not have a display back. The movement is a totally new in-house movement, and UN does want to have a display back to show its new movement. However, UN is unsure at the moment if the display back will become a reality. The watch is in testing right now, and UN has to see if adding a display back will alter the alarm DING sound. Hopefully adding a display back won't alter the sound too much because I would like a display back on this amazing piece. The DING sound on the alarm sounds like the ding from a minute repeater. The hammer doesn't strike the case, but strikes a slender horseshoe shaped metal rod. (Sorry if my description is too vague. I'm not much of a technical guy when it comes to watch parts)

Everything on the watch is integrated and linked to each other. Changing the hour will affect the date, alarm, and the 24-hour countdown subdial on the upper left. Everything changes in harmony! The 24-hour subdial tells you how many hours are remaining before the alarm goes off.

The upper right subdial is where you set the time for the alarm. You set the alarm time using the 3rd crown position, if I remember correctly. Note, it might appear by looking at the picture that there is a crown on the left side of the watch. It is not a crown, but a push button to set the alarm on or off. At 9 o'clock, you will see a yellow hand pointing to On or Off.

The hour push buttons are located on the right and left side of the watch, at 4 & 7 o'clock. These are the quick push buttons used for changing the hour hand +/-.

To wind the watch, you wind the crown clockwise. And for the alarm, counter-clockwise. I forgot if the watch was automatic or manual.

Not only is the watch amazing, but the box will be as well. I wasn't able to see the box, but the UN rep told me that the box will be designed to amplify the alarm sound!! You put the watch in its slot, and the alarm ding will be louder. What brilliance!!

There is no retail price set yet, and so I asked the rep if he had an approximate ball park figure. He told me he thinks it could be around 50,000 swiss francs or possibly even more. Even he doesn't know the exact retail price yet.

I think that is all I can recall right now off the top of my head, and I hope this helps you all

Enjoy,
Anthony Tsai
