Introduction to the Montblanc New 4810 Collection – Part Two

Greetings! We are continuing from Part One where I introduced the newly refreshed Montblanc 4810 collection and shared some product details of the 4810 Chronograph Automatic. I will share more details here on Part Two focusing on two simpler watches from this collection, namely the 4810 Day-Date and the 4810 Automatic Date. These two references, though simple, are expected to sell in greater volumes and form the backbone of the 4810 collection. My regular Montblanc boutique sales consultant told me the Day-Date is especially selling well here in Singapore since it arrived in the stores recently. I can see my colleagues and friends (not into watches) but who want to buy their first contemporary and elegant dress watch for work or as a lifestyle companion, having an interest in these 2 references.

The Montblanc 4810 Day-Date is a highly functional timepiece, featuring a date at 3 o’clock and the day written in full in a large arched aperture at 12 o’clock. Both indicators of Date and Day are very legible. I saw them in the metal last week during the launch of the 4810 Collection, hosted by Mr Davide Cerrato, global MD for Montblanc Watch Category, who was in Singapore for this event.

I was playing with this Montblanc 4810 Day-Date during my lunch with Davide. The bracelet is a big improvement over all previous steel bracelets from Montblanc imho. Feels a lot more solid and comfortable on the wrist.

The hours and minutes are indicated by red gold-plated, regate shaped hands that have been enhanced with SuperLumiNova for legibility in the dark. The second hand has been crafted out of blued steel and follows a precise minute track that runs around the outside of the dial with red numerals for 30 and 60 seconds.

It features an elegant silvery-white guilloche dial that depicts a design Montblanc calls the E;mso-fareast-language:EN-US;mso-bidi-language:AR-SA">“exploding star”; part of the key design DNA of the 4810 collection. The case measures 40.5 mm in diameter and has a height of 10.14 mm. The case has a refined satin finishing on the outside edge of the bezel and newly designed horns that offer improved comfort on the wrist (an improvement from the original Star 4810 collection). The case is also water-resistance to 50 meters—which is rather rare as most of Montblanc’s watches are only water resistant to 30 meters. You still shouldn't swim with this (100m is recommended especially if you need to dive a bit deeper into the pool) but at least you don’t have to worry about a shower/bath or getting caught in a thunderstorm without an umbrella.

The illustration below provides the retail price of the new 4810 Day-Date in both bracelet and strap.

Price is definitely attractive for a Day-Date watch, especially for someone getting his or her first dress watch with a practical day and date indicator. I like the elegance of this watch with the exploding star guilloche and I can understand how the red gold plated Roman indices and hands bring some warmth and added elegance to the silvery-white dial but somehow I feel if the indices and hands are all blued, maybe it will be even nicer. But that’s just me (and a few fellow PuristS I know) who have a fetish for blued hands and indices.

One thing I will emphasize again is the new steel bracelet on this watch, which I hope will cascade to other Montblanc watches for those of us who like steel bracelets. It is a massive improvement over all other Montblanc watch steel bracelets I have tried so far. I suspect it is a run-up to the new sports Montblanc collection which will be launched in 2017, with superior water resistance suitable for swimming, trekking, running and mountain-climbing (to climb Montblanc?!) activities. That will be for 2017 according to Davide so now we can only patiently wait.

A close up picture of the new bracelet: the new stainless steel bracelet seamlessly integrates into the stainless steel case. Its three-link structure with a satin/brushed finished middle part and polished outer links provides some elegance to match with the dressy design of the guilloche dial.

Now, let’s look at another model of the 4810 Collection, a base model for those who prefer not to have a Day indicator and to have a more symmetrical dial with a more discreetly integrated date window – the 4810 Automatic Date. This watch is available in both an elegant silvery-white dial, as well as a more sporty black dial and in both strap and bracelet.

Being a classical three-hand watch, symmetry on the dial is important to maintain an elegant look and hence a date window that is poorly designed may clash with the elegance of the guilloche dial. An arched window at 6 o’clock, where a white triangle with a red gold-plated frame displays the date, somehow works well for this watch as symmetry is maintained without the typical rectangular date window at 3 o’clock. From above the date window, the Montblanc emblem radiates in the same Exploding Star pattern. My pictures with a smartphone don’t do the dial justice and I hope you can see this in the metal.

An extra large, distinctively arched window displays the current date, indicated with a red triangle on the black dial or a golden one on the silvery-white dial.

This reference is available in a classic silvery-white dial or as an edition with a black dial featuring rhodium-plated hands and indices (red gold plated hands and indices for the silver dial version). Similarly to the Day-Date, SuperLumiNova is applied on the hour and minute hands as well as some of the indices to enhance readability in dark conditions. The case and bracelet are the same except the diameter of the Date Automatic is larger at 42mm with the Day-Date at 40.5mm.

I noticed the price difference between the Day-Date and Date Automatic is so low so price won’t be a factor in choosing amongst the two. Rather it will be the design of the dial layout, whether you like a Day-Date indicator vs just a Date as well as the case size that will be factors to consider. For me, the 40.5mm Day-Date will be my pick over the Automatic Date for its more elegant size and I do like the Day indicator. Which do you prefer?
