TimeOut

Looking on the bright side

After a hot, sunny day, and the super duper blue moon last night,

the fog has come in and everything is a bit gray today.

We walked in a "regular" neighborhood - nice enough but not remarkable - so my eye was drawn to items of interest. These wires -- really? Can't they do a bit better???

OK, yes, they can hang more wires on a single pole, but that's not what I meant.

Didn't seem to bother the doves though, having a tete-a-tete. The greyness of the sky varies from shot to shot and I don't know how to adjust them to be all the same ... black and white fans must know.

Now we are back down to earth - in a  sense - as we walk down the alley and spy a mural celebrating both surfing and snow-boarding.

And a lion contemplating a bunch of oranges, in the midst of a huge jungle of vines.

while at the end of the alley we come to a "fence" which can be described with an obscure English word "Ramshackle".

an obsolete form of the verb ransack, meaning "to search through or plunder." (Ransack comes from Old Norse meaning "house" and "seek.") A home that has been ransacked has had its contents thrown into disarray, and that image may be what inspired people to start using ramshackle in the first half of the 19th century to describe something that is poorly constructed or in a state of near collapse...

Yes, I think that describes it quite well.

Turning the corner to the right we realize we are on a main road we've driven many hundreds of times, but never noticed the jungle covering the entire side of this block.

where you can see the result of tree roots vs sidewalk -- the decision goes to the roots! Keen eyes would have spotted the Mustang under canvas already

and perhaps even the Stroppe Bronco mostly hidden by this tarp. It was last registered 10 years ago; do you suppose they know these restored are bringing close to $100,000 at auction?

Immediately next door to the JUNGLE / OLD FORD HOUSE, we suffered a bit of auto culture shock, because the neighbor had a BMW i3 AND a Beetle Rod. Hmmm.

Not to mention a quite vulgar red hand on its porch. Are you supposed to sit on that thing while waiting for them to answer the doorbell? I think not.

The next house had an aggressive MOPAR presence!

I would even call this look Belligerent.

Synonyms from the Oxford English Dictionary include: intimidating, tough, ruthless, "Bad-ass", "Shit-kicker" (yes, they said it, not me), cocky, fire-eating (?), hard, pugilant, rogue, and so forth!

Let's hope he doesn't have all those lights on when he comes up behind you on a narrrow road on a gloomy night... at ramming speed.

A kinder, gentler tone was set across the street with several patches of pottery mosaics adjacent to handicap parking curbs. There were 3 actually, all similar and eye-catching.

I was struck by a nearly vertical driveway -- so steep it need steps for a pedestrian to ascend to the house. Who would drive up this?

An orange cat caught our attention, reminding us of  our Tiger (RIP)

It needed some love and got it from us. As I straightened up after petting the cat, I saw the most incredible...

Parking I have ever seen. Wall, telephone pole. trailer -- which came first or last?

Did the wall-builder slip a piece of wood in there and build right up to it? Did the RV guy drive straight in?

No space on this side either. We gave up wondering when a boy came out the front door on his way to school. The cat was sad to see us go (maybe he was hoping to move to a more spacious home?)

Just across the street we saw imperious dogs and lions and angels guarding this house.

Back to the bright side,

here's what you can do with an old dead tree -- turn it into a plant stand and bird house holder:

An unusual walk for us, a bit rougher 'hood than usual, but I hope you guys found something interesting along the way.
