Orange Love For Under Three Hundred Bucks!
About a month ago I took delivery on a Seiko SKX011J1 dive watch. My understanding is that this particular model with the DOXA ORANGE face is only available through the Japanese market. Before I get into the minutia of my report, let me first say how much I love this watch. The band feels great and the 41mm size sits perfectly on my wrist.
Seiko SKX011J1
Some of the things I love:
- At 41mm's, the watch is very legible.
- Classic divers' one-way bezel.
- Crown at 4:00 is nicely placed with protectors well integrated with the case.
- Rubber strap is long enough to fit over a wet suit and is quite comfortable.
- Day & Date display with easy adjustment via winding crown - turning crown one direction changes day of week, turning crown the other direction changes date.
- Day of the week can be displayed in English or Arabic.
- Wind-down crown is smooth and easy to grasp.
- Great luminescence.
- Good for 200 meters.
- Highly desirable orange dive face.
Seiko SKX011J1
Some of the things I don't love:
- Unlike its heftier and huskier older brother, the blue-faced monster (SRP453), the SKX011J1 does not have a hack seconds movement.
- In timing tests, the watch tends to run a bit fast, with an average daily gain of about 15 seconds.
- Slow turn over of day and date, which begins around 11:30pm and finishes around 2:00am.
- No see through case back.
Seiko SKX011J1 - Back
My love for this brand is growing. I recently purchased and posted about a Seiko Bellmatic about a month or so ago. Unfortunately that new friend is back at the spa for a second treatment. I am hopeful that
ma' belle will return in working order. And I currently find myself lusting after the Blue Faced Monster SRP453, as well as a Grand Seiko in stainless steel. Oy, will it ever end?
Many thanks to Ken for all of the excellent postings on various Seiko timepieces. Without Kenny-san's insight, I am pretty sure this is one "independent" brand I might never have considered. Usually when one of my friends asks me about what watch to get, my next question is always "What's your budget"? At less than three hundred bucks, this orange-faced beauty has love written all over it.

Hi Nilomis...

... Yes, the hands are gold and the bezel markings are also gold-ish. I didn't have to chase too much... found it on Amazon. Ended up buying one for my brother too. He's very happy - like a Cheshire Cat grinning ear to ear. - Scott

We share the same watch model. Here is quite hard to find. As soon I have time I go to take some pics. Mine was with a metal bracelet (removed pronto) and is with a nice vintage looks leather strap. Cheers, Nilo
