Today, for the first time in my watch indulged world, I felt that I was not an orphan...not a leper, but that there were other people in the real world that not only admired on cyber space such watches as Breguet....but, actually bought and wore them.
Today, I saw, I met, I shook hands with, and I actually talked with my first Breguet owner...and for me, a guy that owns three Breguets, that was some occasion.
Now to meet a Breguet owner actually wearing a Breguet might not be unusual in many parts of the world, but in Australia that is a rarity.
Australia is possibly the last country to enjoy a watch culture.
There are many reasons for this...the weather encourages outdoor activities of a rugged style, crocodile bands and fine gold watches do not fair so well in an often hot and tropical styled country equiped for outdoor activities.
There are many adventures that the money needed to acquire a fine watch could better go towards...like buying that ski boat, a jet ski, a light aircraft, a 4WD or just a tropical Barrier Reef Island holiday, or better still a holiday in Asia....either way most Australians have been happy to embrace quality watches, but not necessarily high end watches.
Brands marketed here in the 1950’s / 60’s, and later, like Casio...not the calculators...the watches..Seiko, Omega, Tissot, Longines, and for a while when they were still affordable some Gerard Perregaux were usually the extent of any wrist shaker’s time teller....an occasional Rolex can be seen but often on Asian, Middle Eastern or European new comers wrists....or people working in international type industries, that have been exposed to and see a need for a quality work watch, like say a charter boat operator etc, who could see the benefit of an indestructible, water proof, stainless, can’t kill it type watch, would buy a Rolex.
But to go for a Breguet or PP is pretty rare down under....OK I know Andrew has been infected to the Breguet Virus....but Andrew is like about 3,000 kilometres from me...so what I am saying is there is a lot of grey and red dust between Breguet owners down under.
Anyway it went like this...I had a business meeting with a gentleman who turned out to be from from Georgia...that is Georgia, Russia, as in not Georgia next to Alabama U.S.
At first he did not speak English and all discussion was through an interpreter.
We spoke for about half an hour and I saw his sleeve slip up and noticed this gold bracelet with wide and thin links and deep lines and then caught a glimpse of this Turk head style crown....while talking I kept looking until I finally caught sight of the dial and as it turned out we were in full sun and sure enough there was this silver dial with a serial number on it.
I clasped his wrist and looked... and it was an early yellow gold Breguet Marine with gold bracelet.....and what was I wearing...none other than my Breguet 5817 Marine...crock strap of course.
Well the meeting mood changed and we moved forward at concord speed...all of a sudden he learned to speak English..we were blood brothers from that point on...there was an instant relationship that made us old friends...he bought his Breguet about 10 years ago and mentioned that I was the first person in Australia that he had ever seen with a Breguet and I replied that he was the first person in the world that I had ever seen with a Breguet.
Amazing things watches....Like keys they let us in or keep us out....but get the right "Key" and they allow, and give access, to universial communication.
Kindest regards to all,
Jack.
