Hello all,
I'm hoping I can get some help from the knowledgeable group here on the PP forum. A friend of mine's father recently passed, and she inherited his pocket watch. Since she knew I was a "watch person" she asked me to look at it to give her my impressions of the watch. They have little information in the family about this watch (that can be found at least) so I am hoping that someone here can answer a few questions. I have attached a few pictures for your reference.

Note that the hands appear to be rose gold and not yellow gold as the case is.

Here is a shot of the movement

Now for the questions:
1/ Is this a genuine PP? Inside the case there are several hand engraved numbers in small print. I think the watchmakers that serviced the watch over the years may have done these, but I'm not sure of that. According to my friend, her father would get a letter from the company every so often stating that it was time to send the watch in for service. These details would lead me to believe that it is genuine.
2/ There is a number stamped inside the caseback - 96144 - is this a model number, or case number?
3/ There is a number on the movement as well - 127858 - is this the calibre number?
4/ Are the hands original to the watch? I suspect not.
5/ Any idea regarding the date of manufacture? There is what appears to be a patent date on the movement of Jan. 19, 1891.
6/ I have been trying to figure out what the hands represent - they almost appear to be initals or letters......any thoughts?
I (and my friend) would certainly appreciate any information that can be offered about this watch. It appears to be in decent shape, although the case is scratched up a little, and there is dirt under the crystal (I think it is a hinged affair that you can open like the back is). The watch ran fine after a bit of winding, but could use a cleaning.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Regards, Al
