IWC

Ref. 1832

Designed by Gerald Genta with the design finalised in 1974 , the 1832 Ingenieur was released in 1976 and was the first model of the SL collection. Hannes Pantli, who was from the sales department, saw the need to pivot to stainless steel offerings as the price of gold had tripled during 1971 to 1974. In that era, IWC focused on gold watches and having to triple the price of their products would be problematic. With this and IWC requiring a watch to accommodate its calibre 8541, the brief for Gerald Genta to create a round watch with an integrated bracelet along with some technical considerations was born.

The case is around 40mm in diameter and is 12.5mm in height. These dimensions gave it the ‘jumbo’ moniker. This model features a black ‘waffle’ pattern dial. A silver dial with no ‘waffle’ pattern was also available.

A time when IWC still used the lovely script signature. I think it has more character and charm than the current typeface.

The movement is calibre 8541ES which features automatic winding, a power reserve of around 40 hours and beats at 19,800 vibrations per hour. The ‘ES’ denotes the use of antimagnetic components, the inclusion of stop seconds and rubber cushions. It does not have a quick set date and you will need to move the hands clockwise and anticlockwise at the midnight mark to advance the date quickly.

543 1832s were made with a portion being made of steel and gold.
