Independents

Servicing an independent watch in future.....

Servicing a highly regarded independent watch is always a topic that interests me.
Unlike watches from Lange, Patek, Journes and other big manufacturers......most independent watches are done by a very small team of very talented watchmakers.
Classic Watches from Kari, Dufour and Vianney and Roger Smith are done in a way that are meant to be able to be serviced by any good watchmakers.......
True but what if the servicing requires more than a lubrication and needs some change of parts.....
Can anyone explains what usually needs to change during servicing and are those parts critical and strictly required to be parts produce
by the original watchmakers?
I guess Vintage watch collectors will be able to help as they tend to strictly require things to be in original form.

This servicing issue comes to my mind because, recently, I almost bought a PLM .
Under the loupe, one can tell that the watch hase been tempered as the blue screws are scratched.
This obviously is not done by Lange and base on what I found out, it's probably done by watch expert from auction house.
And after verifying with friends, it's true that auction house does have their watch expert opening up masterpieces to 'service' it.
This fact starts to worry me abit when it comes to watches from auction house and it starts to make me think
who shall I send my watches for servicing in future, if the watchmakers decide to retire.
At least , in this case, lange will be able to fix whatever 'damage' that has been done to this PLM should you send it back to its Glassutte Spa smile

I look forward to your thoughts smile
