SIHH 2014 - Greubel Forsey

This year, Greubel Forsey presents 4 novelties - Diamond Set Tourbillon 24 Secondes Contemporain, Double Tourbillon Technique 30° Bi-color, Platinum GMT and QP à ÉQUATION.

Three of the models are reinterpreted with change in aesthetics.   The new QP à ÉQUATION, there is still some work in progress, thus no photography was permitted as there may be changes.

As prototype pieces are limited in the fair, and to be shared among various press meetings, each model was literally with me for just a minute or so.

Here are some snapshots of the three novelties.

Starting with the Double Tourbillon Technique 30° Bi-color.

The Double Tourbillion Technique 30°, is not only the first invention of Greubel Forsey, it is also the winner of the 2011 International Chronometry Competition in the mechanical tourbillon category and still holding the highest score of 915 points till today.

This year, Greubel Forsey decides to give Double Tourbillion Technique 30° with Calibre GF02S, a change of colour scheme to a Bi-colour series, available in two versions - platinum and 5N red gold case with deep black chrome finish of the movement to provide better contrast than the previous edition.

Each metal is limited to 22 pieces.

Below are the snapshots of the Platinum version ...

The Platinum is the more contrasty version.  On the sides of the 47.50mm diameter caseband, two pieces of side plates in titanium with black Amorphous Diamond Like Carbon (ADLC) coating recounting the story and philosophy of the inventors.

The spherical differential is at location 1:30H.  The 120-hour power-reserve indicator at 3H, the Double Tourbillon 30° beating at 21,600v/h at 6H.
The first carriage rotates horizontally in four minutes while the second which is inclined at 30°, rotates a round in 60 seconds. Small seconds display at 9H. At 11H, the four co-axial series-coupled barrels (with a engraved 22K gold cover) which has a total capacity for 160 hours, provides the 120 hours of precise timekeeping.

Bridges and main-plate are of nickel silver, frosted and black chrome treated.

Diamond Set Tourbillon 24 Secondes Contemporain

The Tourbillon 24 Secondes Contemporain was dressed up in 'blue & white glittering maritime' theme to commemorate the 10thanniversary of Greubel Forsey.  272 top notch baguette diamonds (of clarity IF and colour D - E), totaling 9.71 carats, were set on the 43.5mm diameter white gold case and the upper-plate.

All the baguette diamonds are of different size on the upper-plate and lugs.  They have to be carefully matched and cut to tight tolerance to ensure no gap and same brilliance among the neighbouring pieces.

Lower or main-plate is of titanium, frosted and with royal blue treatment.  Synthetic sapphire crystal tourbillon bridge securing the tourbillon cage, inclinded at 25 degree angle, performing 24-second rotation.

Small-second display at 9:30H, and directly opposite is the 72 hour- power reserve indicator.

Cambered sapphire crystal reduces glare, providing a clear detailed view of the tourbillon and the glittering diamonds on the baguette-set upper-plate.  The bezel surrounding was set with 60 baguette diamonds while the four lugs were with 80.

Flanking both sides of the caseband were two white gold plates, engraved with philosophy of Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey.
Movement is the hand-wound Calibre GF01C beating at 21,600 VPH  with 72 hour power reserve.

Platinum GMT

The 43.50mm diameter  GMT (dual time zone) also has a new contrasty version -  Platinum  and Black Chrome plates with the Calibre GF05.

I prefer this version than earlier red gold with silver-plates.  The blue terrestrial globe draws your eyes to the watch.

Just beside the hour & minute subdial is the small second followed by the power reserve indicator and the Tourbillon 24 Secondes. Next is the 3D titanium rotating globe which rotates one round anti-clockwise like the earth in 24 hours.  Just above it is the 2nd time zone GMT subdial with the GMT pusher beside.

A close up of the rotating  titanium globe.
Notice the black chrome treated nickel silver plate is beautifully  frosted and spotted.  All other bridges and subdials are meticulously hand-beveled too.

The caseback side, more legible with this new black chrome version, the gold world time disc and the blue screws really stand out.  Global time on the planisphere is displayed in real time and could be read in a single glance with the summer time disc in the centre.

The GMT Calibre GF05 beats at 21,600VPH and on two barrels providing a power reserve of 72 hour.

QP à ÉQUATION

This piece is still in prototyping stage, so pictures are postponed till later part of this year.

Below is the press release shot of the QP à ÉQUATION - a perpetual calender and Equation of Time, with the objective of easy to read and more remarkably, a single crown to adjust all the date functions intuitively -  no fear of adjusting the date forward or backward.

The case is 43.50mm white gold and the dial is anthracite gold. On the dial side, the sub-dial at 2H is the 72-hour power reserve, followed by the date-function selector.  Next is the day-date-month window and leap-year indicator.
Continue is the day-and-night indicator and the small second.

At the back, will be the year indicator, equation of time with seasons, solstices and equinoxes indicators.

Bridges and plate of the Calibre GF07 with the 24-second Tourbillon inclined at 25°,  are frosted and spotted nickel silver.  Movement beats at 21,600 VPH and has a power of 72 hours.  However, this is a semi-instantaneous perpetual calender, will be great it is an instantaneous.
