Tudor Black Bay 58 (2nd Attempt)

I ordered a Black Bay 58 after seeing the pictures and reviews following Baselworld and collected it last week. I thought I would offer my first impressions and a few pictures.

Firstly, let me say I really like this watch. The reduction in size compared with the standard B.B. makes a big difference to someone like me who has a slim wrist and the watch feels very comfortable. For those with larger wrists I think it would still look and feel fine. In fact it wears very much like a Submariner.

The dial is very attractive; matte black with gold or gilt text and minute markers which nicely match the gold colour of the hands, indices and markers on the bezel. The bezel has a sporty red triangle at 12 o’clock. I think the most attractive aspect of the dial is the colour of the luminous material which is a lovely creamy colour giving a slight vintage look. This seems much nicer than the faux aged patina which has become quite commonplace of late. There’s a lot of lume on the dial making it very easy to read in the dark.

My only criticism of the dial is the amount of text. I’m fine with name and logo and it is a diver so I’m ok with the depth rating. I’m even ok with “Chronometer” but could certainly do without “Officially Certified” which adds nothing.

The bracelet seems well made and robust and the rivet effect adds further to the vintage look. For me, the watch and bracelet together seems quite heavy and I shall look for a nice strap as soon as possible.  Accuracy so far is about 2 to 3 seconds fast per day so no complaints there.

Overall then I think Tudor have picked a winner with this one. The friendlier size, in-house movement, vintage looks, build quality and price point make it IMHO, a very attractive package.

I’ll leave you with a picture of the watch with an elderly relative.

Thanks for looking. Regards Kev.
