I was in a well-known Sydney dealership yesterday looking at the Breguets. They had a nice mixture of Classiques - a 3130 and a 5140 with the beautiful enamel dial, among others - Marines, Heritages, type XXs, and lady's watches (including the marvellous Reines de Naples). No Grands Complications, alas.
The dealer was hovering, so I asked a few questions. Apropos of nothing, he volunteered that Breguets were "very complicated" watches, and "really only for collectors". Huh? How is a 5907 any more "complicated" than any other dress watch? Would he have said that their Pateks or APs were "only for collectors"? I thought it was a very odd thing to say to a potential client.
In retrospect I realised that he may have been subtly steering me away towards the more "affordable" brands, having decided I didn't look like a "collector" and therefore wasn't about to spend Breguet-level money in his shop. Or could it be that (in his experience) Breguets simply aren't very reliable? I find that hard to believe.
Actually, while I don't have the funds right now, I would indeed contemplate purchasing a Breguet at some point in the future. Being a fan of rose gold, I pointed out to the dealer that he did not appear to have any RG watches on display. He said, "That one's a rose gold", pointing to a type XX on a leather deployant band. Now, the XX comes in both YG and RG, but this one looked like YG. Is there a big difference? For comparison, JLC's RG cases are very obviously different to their YG. I love the colour of JLC's RG. Any comments on Breguet's RG?
